Rescue: HI-Surf Season 1 Episode 7 starts with Sonny nursing his injuries after the motorbike accident. Of course, his wife wants to know what happened to the bike. She drives him to pick up the bike where it crushed, but Sonny does not exactly divulge information about what happened. At the shore, an influencer couple and their videographer take a ruin-the-dress video at the beach. One of the ladies is in a wedding gown. She gets pulled by the water and her partner rushes in to save her. Unfortunately, another wave comes crashing into them. It draws them deeper into the ocean.

Elsewhere, the lifeguards report for duty. Laka reminds Will about the bet on his sobriety. Laka is willing to extend his sobriety and Will bets more money as he doesn’t think Laka will win. They find Emily already at the office. Apparently, Sonny texted, informing her that he had errands to do in town. They get the call about the influencer couple and rush to save them.

Back to Sonny, he visits Kainalu’s dad and asks for a favour. He gives him a list of some things they need. Speaking of Kainalu, he is struggling with Hina’s lack of boundaries. She invited her aunt, Loke to the house to do some laundry without informing him. However, Hina thinks boundaries are a luxury only rich people can afford to enjoy.

The day gets busy with more people dropping by the beach to relax. Will shows Emily his new business van. His side hustle teaching surfing is picking up. He wants to make more money before his wedding. He mentions that he would like Emily to attend his wedding, and she promises to think about it.

As they talk, Sean drops by with some food for Emily. He also tells her about the possibility he might get a new job at Kauai. She tells him that he should go for what he wants and they will figure things out. Sean is hurt by her response.

Sonny arrives a few minutes later and asks to talk to Emily. He tells her that she was right and he is setting things right. He acknowledges that he has been tripping but hopes that one day, when she is captain, she will understand his decisions. Meanwhile, Laka, Hina and Kainalu help a boy who got into an accident while riding his bike near the tower. Laka’s quick response saves the boy’s life and impresses Jenn.

As the day slowly comes to an end, Sonny apologises to Hina. He is kind enough to tell her she will make a good lifeguard and to always rely on her training. Emily watches them from afar, happy that Sonny is doing better. After their shift, Will asks Laka to help him with a surfing lesson. Laka refuses as he has plans with his grandma, so Will asks Emily and she agrees. Julie is not happy to hear Will got help from Emily. She informs Will that Emily is not invited to their wedding.

The next day, Kainalu’s dad comes through and brings in the stuff the lifeguards need. He is also bringing a new tower and skis in a few weeks. Sonny and the others are happy. Later that day, he saves a woman when she loses her breath while swimming.  After Will and Emily finish their surf lesson, they talk about Sean. Will advises Emily to tell Sean how she feels. Will also informs Emily that Julie doesn’t want her at the wedding. Emily is hurt but pretends it is all cool. In the meantime, Laka gets the courage to ask Jenn out again. This time, she doesn’t turn him down. His grandma advises him to take the relationship slow.

The following day, tension between Will and Emily continues to rise. It doesn’t help that Laka can’t stop talking about the wedding invitation and how grand the wedding will be. He later goes on his date with Jenn. Kainalu heads home and finds Aunt Loke relaxing after cleaning up the house. He thanks her and they get to talking. She, in turn, thanks him for letting Hina move in. Hina arrives later, feeling proud and excited after buying a surfboard. She has always got hand-downs, and this is the first time she bought herself a new one.

Taking Will’s advice, Emily visits Sean at work and admits she likes him and she will miss him if he leaves. Sean is touched and kisses her. At Sonny’s house, he tells his wife that he is sorry for getting into an accident. He admits he has been struggling since his nephew died. He blames himself for Zion’s death.

His wife suggests he talk to someone, but he refuses. He then tells her that he has been calling in favours at work. He got new equipment for the team as a parting gift. He is done being a lifeguard. His wife understandably hugs him, saying it is okay.

The Episode Review

Sonny’s decision to quit is not a big surprise. From the beginning of the episode, he has been acting as if he is saying goodbye. From his conversation with Emily and Hina and how he looked at the sea after saving the woman. The telltale signs were there. It is not a bad thing. He has given most of his life to this job and it has not been easy. The sea has given but also taken a lot from him.

In the meantime, Will’s wedding is coming soon, and I don’t think he and Emily have closure. They act like it is all good, but there is a lot of tension underneath. To be fair, Julie is within her rights not to invite Emily to the wedding. Emily is Will’s ex after all, and they already spend a lot of time together at work.

Emily should probably let this one slide. I like Sean, but I have a feeling that Emily will be breaking his heart soon. We are also getting nowhere with Kainalu and Hina, but Aunt Loke is the latest cupid and captain of that ship. I bet she will have these two get together in no time. However, Laka and Jenn are off to a good start. Fingers crossed, they keep it like that!
