Rescue: HI-Surf – Season 1 Episode 11 Recap & Review

Caught Inside

Episode 11 of Rescue: HI-Surf starts with Sonny, feeling proud after seeing Ocen is doing better since her beloved cousin died. On his way to work, he texts his wife, informing her they need to talk. Most likely about Ocean and how the family has been handling the loss.

Meanwhile, our cheaters are in bed. Emily asks Will to inform Julie about their reconnection once she arrives. Emily is under the impression that the wedding will be called off and she can officially get back with Will.

At work, Kainalu asks Laka to train and help him get his ski certification. Laka teases Hina until she agrees to train as well. The day starts with them rescuing a group of surfers. One of the surfers breaks his leg, and another one nearly drowns.

On her way to work, Emily runs into Sean. Instead of being truthful about why she ghosted him, she lies that she needs time to focus on her job. Sean understands and drops the issue. In the meantime, Laka tries to talk to Will about calling off his wedding. He reminds Will why his relationship with Emily didn’t work out in the first place. Laka argues that Julie and Will are a better match, as they have the same life goals. However, Will is hell-bent on choosing Emily, who he calls his person.

On her break, Hina runs into Emily and they talk about the captain’s position. It dawns on Emily that being a captain will involve less field work and more pushing papers and diplomacy. On her shift with Will and a new rookie, the team saves a woman trying to play mermaid. The woman goes against the lifeguards’ advice not to swim dressed as a mermaid and nearly drowns.

Back at the office, Sonny talks to Laka about how to take care of a few things and help Emily in her new position. Laka admits that Sonny was right about him tripping. He promises to get his head back in the game and do better. On the other hand, Sonny assures him that he is leaving them in good hands.

The following morning, Will tries to talk to Julie but gets cold feet. Julie assumes he is worried about the big wedding and suggests they elope. She confesses that she doesn’t care about the wedding as long as they are together.

Elsewhere, Sonny gets the courage to visit his sister at work. He wants her to get better too, but she is not ready. He admits that he blames himself for what happened to Zion. He invites his sister to visit Zion’s memorial together, but his sister turns him down. Sonny heads to work and is moved when the team gifts him a surfing board as a parting gift.

Later at work, tensions start rising between Will and Emily. Emily is worried that Will has changed his mind. She insists that he talks to Julie after his shift. In the meantime, Laka starts training Hina and Kainalu. They run into Jenn and Hina makes a sweet remark about Laka being a good man when Jenn asks if he is hitting on her. This forces Jenn to re-evaluate her impression of Laka.

Later that day, Sonny drops by Zion’s memorial. He is surprised when his sister shows up, and they finally forgive each other and themselves. After the end of the shift, Will breaks Emily’s heart when he tells her that he will be staying with Julie. He feels that they will always have problems because they want different things. Emily tries to dissuade him, but Will apologises and walks away. Julie is furious when she finds out about Will’s infidelity from her sister. She ends the relationship with him, despite his attempts to make amends.

Elsewhere, Hina, Kainalu, Laka and a few other people head out for a few drinks. Jenn talks to Laka and asks if he is open to trying to be at least friends. She admits that she might have misjudged him. Unfortunately, Laka turns her down as he is trying to focus on himself and work. On the other hand, Kainalu continues to do his best to hide his feelings for Hina.

Back at the office, Emily drops a bombshell on Sonny when she informs him that she no longer wants to be captain. She goes home to drink her pain away and calls Sean. He shows up with food and asks for an explanation. He is not shocked to hear about Emily’s affair with Will. However, he is shocked she turned down the captain’s job. He tries to be supportive, and Emily asks him to stay when he gets up to leave.

The Episode Review

Emily and Will are self-destructing. Didn’t they think about how their affair would hurt Julie and the future of their relationship? It seems they just followed their feelings without weighing the impact of what will happen. Did Will think he could choose Julie and it would erase his betrayal? Did Emily think that once Will leaves Julie, they will start their fairytale happy ending?

Not once have they even discussed what getting back together would mean.  They didn’t even address why they broke up in the first place. Will and Emily have been too selfish, and it is about time they get a taste of karma. Also, is Emily serious about giving up the captain’s position? It was all she ever wanted, but what’s next?

Meanwhile, we have come full circle with Sonny. We first met him when he was deep in his grief. It was difficult to watch how Zion’s death tore the family apart. Thankfully, the family has slowly started to heal. Sonny has made great progress, and it is moving to see him try to be there for his sister.

Unfortunately, Jenn and Laka might not end up together, but we’re still hopeful for Hina and Kainalu, who would be a fantastic match.

  1. This show is fun but the Will/Emily stuff is terrible. It’s hard for the viewer to root for either of them, they are the most poorly written characters in the show.
