Riptide
Episode 10 of Rescue: HI-Surf starts with a man stealing an ATV and taking it for a joyride on the beach. Unfortunately, he carelessly runs over a woman, breaking both of her legs. Emily and Will rush to help the woman. After the paramedics arrive, Emily allows Will to chase the rider, and he joins Sonny. Sadly, the thief jumps into the sea when Sonny and Will corner him. Of course, the police take credit for the arrest even though Sonny and Will did all the heavy lifting.
Meanwhile, Emily and Will continue to play with fire, sneaking kisses here and there. Will informs Emily that Julie will be back on Thursday and she acts like it is all fine. On the other hand, Hina is avoiding Kainalu after their passionate night. This causes awkwardness between the two, and of course, Laka picks up on the vibes. Laka also checks in with Will to make sure the wedding is still on.
In the morning brief, Sonny announces his upcoming resignation and his support for Emily to replace him. Emily is bubbling with new ideas, and Sonny is rooting for her. However, he warns her of the burden that comes with being captain.
For her first test, he asks Emily to attend the Council Meeting later that day and gives her a script to stick to. He cautions her that she needs to be on Councilman Reed’s good side. Unfortunately, Emily messes up and lets another resident rile her up when discussing a possible new tower at Keiki Beach.
The exchange goes viral, many applauding Emily, but Sonny is not pleased. However, Kenji is silently happy that Emily is making enemies before even taking one of the sought-after jobs in the county.
After having lunch with his wife and noticing she is hesitant about their holiday plans, Sonny returns to the office. He gives Emily a sit-down and educates her on the politics of the job. He asks her to wait to see how things will fare, but makes it clear she needs to think through every action before making a move in the future.
Also in a bad mood is Laka. He has been acting out after getting robbed. He is invited to a surf polo game, and Kainalu offers to team up. However, Laka lets his mood and ego get to him and refuses to pass the ball to Kainalu. After the first half, Laka nearly gets into a physical fight with the other players.
Thankfully, Kainalu holds him back and confronts him. He also notices this is the second time that Laka is acting out of character. Earlier in the day, Lake was a bit rude to a woman whose family they saved when she mentioned she lost her ring, which was a family heirloom. In the second half of the game, Kainalu takes charge of the ball more often and they end up winning the game.
As they watch the boys play, Emily warns Hina not to mix business with pleasure as it didn’t end well for her with Will. Emily has been reflecting on her behaviour with Will and even tries to confide in Jenn. However, she doesn’t go into details. A call interrupts their conversation, and Jenn ends up saving the woman’s life by holding her artery throughout the ride to the hospital.
As the day progresses, Sonny visits Councilman Reed and does some damage control. Being the diplomatic king that he is, Sonny makes it look like he is paying gratitude ahead of his resignation. He lifts the Councilman’s ego and by the end of the conversation; the man promises to look into the new tower. On the way out, he runs into Kenji and it seems the latter has not given up hope that Emily will not get the promotion.
At the end of the shift, Sonny meets with Emily and gives her the good news about the tower. He encourages and shows his continued support for her. Later, Emily runs into Jenn who advises her to have a real, honest conversation with Will before the wedding.
Meanwhile, Hina and Kainalu decide to put their rendezvous behind them and continue being roommates. Simultaneously, Laka opts to hang back and help the woman look for her lost ring. Luckily, he manages to find it and saves the day twice.
In the meantime, Sonny is surprised when Will asks for advice about choosing the right person for marriage. Sonny explains that it is all about how the other person makes you feel. He goes home and has an honest conversation with his wife about her anxiety over his retirement. The episode ends with Emily and Will having an honest conversation where they confess their deep love for each other before kissing.
The Episode Review
The whole Will and Emily affair is annoying, to say the least. While we are trying not to judge, we can’t ignore that they are choosing to hurt people in their lives. Listen, if they had all these steamy, mushy confession moments after breaking up with their respective partners, we would be happy for them.
However, Will just got back from his tux fitting for his wedding and has Emily conveniently forgotten her hunky boyfriend? What they are doing is wrong and their second chance is starting on the wrong foot.
One couple we are rooting for is Hina and Kainalu, but it looks like it won’t be happening. Still, their mature approach to the whole thing is admirable, even though it took Hina a while to get there. Seriously, where is Cupid when you need him? Clearly Kainalu is down bad for our girl.
On the other hand, it is nice to see Sonny in a good place. Retirement is looking good on him even before he starts it. As much as life has its uncertainties, he and his wife have a good relationship and hopefully, he will find a new passion.
Meanwhile, our boy Laka is going through it, but he is making progress. The robbing incident was a learning lesson, and one he desperately needed. The real question is, did the lesson stick? I guess the remaining 9 episodes of the season will reveal the answer.
