Has The Handmaid’s Tale been renewed for Season 6? Here’s what we know:

Renewed Or Cancelled?

The Handmaid’s Tale has been Huu’s long-running dystopian drama, and season 5 has been quite the rollercoaster ride over the weeks. After finishing all 10 episodes, you may be wondering if this has been renewed or cancelled. Here’s what we know:

What is The Handmaid’s Tale Season 5 about?

The story picks up after the shocking death of Fred Waterford. Still with the Commander’s blood on her hands, June is absolutely blood lusting and desperate to extend that revenge over to Serena. Unfortunately, June’s rage also alienates her family, with Luke and Moira struggling to contain June’s wrath.

While this is going on, Serena engages in some serious psychological warfare, taunting June from afar with notes and a desire to expand Gilead’s reach into Canada at the same time. As we saw from last year, there are followers for Gilead and this season they’re far more vocal.

Canadians have started to turn on the refugees, with big signs and marches to get the Americans out. Serena is still very pregnant but elevated to a position of diplomatic power in an effort to bridge the gap between Gilead and the rest of the world. And what better way to show solidarity than a public funeral for Fred.

The effect of what happens here essentially ripples out across the rest of the season, as June and Serena end up on a warpath with one another.

Has The Handmaid’s Tale been renewed for season 6?

At the time of writing, The Handmaid’s Tale Season 5 has been renewed for a sixth and final season. Given the nature of the show’s content, that’s hardly surprising

Streaming platforms tend to gauge how many people initially watch the show and then look more closely at the drop-off rate. With some shows, cancellations or renewals happen quickly (ala. Squid Game, Bridgerton & Irregulars) Other times, it can take months.

In the case of The Handmaid’s Tale, this show has had a decent reaction from audiences and critics alike. The news came in a while back that The Handmaid’s Tale would be back for season 6 and then follow-up by leading into The Revenants, which is Margaret Atwood’s follow-on novel.

We’ll be sure to update this section with accurate details over the coming weeks and months when we know more!

What we know about season 6 so far:

Barely anything is known about season 6 at this point, but we do know that there are plans to adapt – but not necessarily stick wholly close to – the source material. In an interview with Deadline, Miller was quoted saying:

I’m working on The Testaments while I’m working on Season 6 of The Handmaid’s Tale. It’s so lovely to have another book to go to. I think the people watch the TV show have to be comfortable with the fact that just like Handmaid‘s didn’t follow the book, The Testaments is a sequel to this TV show. So I’m not necessarily shooting for those things the way that they are in The Testaments but everybody is growing in those directions.

It’s fair to say season 6 is going to be quite the dramatic affair, with Nick, Janine and Luke’s fate unknown at this point. It’s unknown whether any of these guys will make it out alive, and how June and Aunt Lydia play a part in all this.

As mentioned above, we do know this has been renewed, but we’ll have to wait and see what’s in store for us next year when Handmaid’s Tale returns!
