Has The Buccaneers been renewed for Season 2? Here’s what we know:

Renewed or Cancelled?

The Buccaneers marks one of Apple TV’s first foray into the period drama genre. The streaming platform hosts a great collection of sci-fi and comedy shows so its rare to see a series like The Buccaneers, which is based on Edith Wharton’s 1938 novel of the same name. The book remained unfinished for a while but finally got a fitting ending years after Wharton’s death.

Wharton uses her own experience of growing up as an American looking for the validation of British nobility. Her book presents a strong critique of the institution of marriage and how society tied a woman’s happiness to it. The Apple TV show stars Kristine Froseth, Ibri Aubrag, Guy Remmers, and Alisha Boe in the core cast.

If you’ve finished watching this one, you may be wondering if this has been renewed or cancelled. Here’s what we know so far:

What is The Buccaneers Season 1 about?

The Buccaneers is set in 1870s England. Five American girls – Nan, Conchita, Lizzie, Mabel, and Ginny – who all belong to wealthy families, go to England to “find a husband.” The show follows their journeys which are beset with highs and heartbreaks. While Conchita is married to Lord Richard – a love marriage – she faces a cold reception from his family who disapprove of her.

Ginny finds a husband in Richard’s brother, James Seadown. However, he isn’t a prince charming or as innocent as he looks. James has an ugly run-in with Lizzie that exposes his true face and character. After the incident, Lizzie retracts into her shell, no longer concerning herself with finding a husband. Mabel’s sexual orientation ensures that she too remains unmarried and out of the hunt for a husband. She takes an interest in Horoia Marable, Richard and James’ sister, who reciprocates Mabel’s feelings.

When all is said and done, The Buccaneers’ true focus remains on Nan and her love triangle with Guy Thwaite and The Duke of Tintagel, Theo. What complicates matters is that Theo and Guy are best mates and both of them court Nan.

As the series progresses, we learn secrets – or realities – about our characters that challenge us to form an opinion on them. We have covered the entire show with detailed episodic recaps, which might prove to be helpful for viewers yet to watch the show.

Has The Buccaneers been renewed for Season 2?

The Buccaneers has been renewed for a Season 2

Generally, Apple TV+, like other streamers, gauges numerous metrics before renewing a show, including how many people initially watch it and then looking at the drop-off rate. With some shows, cancellations or renewals happen quickly (ala. Only Murders in the Building, Dark Winds etc.) Other times, it can take months before streamers decide a show’s future.

Season 1 of the show has received mixed reactions from audiences and critics. Since it is based on a beloved novel, The Buccaneers has undergone critical scrutiny pretty much from the outset. Many have found its blend of 19th-century sensibilities with a modern feminist outlook to be inspiring. However, we did not echo those thoughts in our review of the show.

What do we know about Season 2 so far:

Not much is known about season 2 at the time of writing. It will be fair to assume that the new season will pick up from the same story.

The Buccaneers ended on an exciting note as Nan finally took the bold step of helping Ginny escape the clutches of her abusive husband. She took Guy’s help to take her to a safe place, although she decided against running away with him. Instead, Nan decided to honour the “wedding of the season” and take vows with Theo. It remains to be seen if the marriage will happen and how Ginny’s saga with Seadown will develop.

Most of the cast members are returning for the next season. We’ll be sure to update this section with more information as it becomes available.
