Renewed Or Cancelled?
Issa Rae’s blitzkrieg depiction of the rap scene in Miami caught everyone by surprise for its boldness. Rap Sh!t isn’t anything like ordinary television we see every day. Although it does not belong in the same league as Atlanta, the show has its own priorities and creative arcs.
What we see in season 1 of Rap Sh!t is more in-sync with modern sensibilities about how the rap revolution is gradually enveloping mass audiences. The story functions on a very specific cultural representation and hence has a chance to essentially deep dive into the mechanics of how things work.
Season 1 did end on a cliffhanger as Shawna was searched by the police in the credit card scam she ran with Maurice. It all came crashing down for the wannabe rapper whose emotions have ebbed and flowed.
You might be wondering if the show has been renewed for season 2. We are here to answer all your questions with the most accurate information and rumors out in town within this article! Here is what we know:
What is Rap Sh!t about?
Rap Sh!t centers on the renewed bond between two estranged high school friends through music. Although they’re not fast friends yet, the idea of a rap group entices both of them as their first single becomes a hit.
Creator Issa Rae is equally mindful of showing you Miami city at its most adventurous, raunchy, and creative, capturing the essence of the rap culture in its most primal form.
Mia and Shawna’s journey toward fame and money is marred with issues that are mostly personal and see the two grow as people as they navigate life problems.
Has Rap Sh!t been renewed for season 2?
The show has not been renewed for season 2, yet, but the announcement should be imminent given the developments around it. Interestingly, the developments come from a peculiar source and that source is the government!
According to a Deadline report on 18 July, which was before season 1 premiered, the show State of California awarded Rap Sh!t a $12.6 million tax credit to film the second season there. Estimates peg the production budget for season 1 at roughly six mils so this amount in itself mainly covers the cost of production.
Ideas are already bustling in the writer’s room, as Aida Osman, a writer on the team who also plays Shawna, confirmed. They are already talking about how to take the story and characters forward.
Issa Rae was recently asked at the screening of another show about a probable season 2 and she replied that she “is not worried” about it getting greenlit. With that in mind, we predict that this will be renewed for a second season.
What we know about season 2 so far:
The tax credit story is a major indicator of a second season but other than that, we do not have ground level confirmation from HBO… yet. Things are in the works to get it renewed as soon as possible we’d imagine.
If it is, there are high chances we will see a blossoming music career for Mia, and maybe Shawna if she is able to avoid jail and new challenges that the industry poses them. Their resoluteness will also be tested as it will increasingly become a game of survival of who wants it more than the other. That’s how artists survive and ensure that they stick to the top.
Even if Shawna does go to jail, it might actually be a good crevice in her arc. Within the finale, we saw Mia go out on a date with Ca$h, who himself had gone to jail but came out to become a successful rapper. Maybe that is what is in store for Shawna as well, if she does go to prison. More details on this as soon as we hear something new.
