Has Fargo been renewed for Season 6? Here’s what we know:

Renewed or Cancelled?

Fargo is one of FX’s most successful television offerings. Not just that, but the show, over the course of its five seasons, has set a high standard for filmmaking. Noah Hawley adapted the show from the 1996 Coen brothers film – “with their blessings.” Although the story has changed in every season, elements of storytelling and the ethos of the production have remained the same.

The anthology format has attracted a host of stars to the show. Martin Freeman, Billy Bob Thornton, Carrie Coon, Mary Winstead, Bob Odenkirk, Jon Hamm…so many big names. The format has also ensured that each season is an adventure with a conclusive ending and peculiar characters.

Season 5 did stray away from the base in the second half, like the previous instalment. Nonetheless, it has got fans excited about the possibility of the show being renewed.

If you’ve been watching this one, you may be wondering if this has been renewed or cancelled. Here’s what we know so far:

What is Fargo Season 5 about?

Season 5 of Fargo revolves around the character of Dorothy Lyon (played by Juno Temple). It is set in Scandia, Minnesota, but also ventures beyond its territory. Dot is seemingly a simple housewife who loves her daughter, Scotty, and her husband Wayne. Her towering surname comes from Wayne’s mother, Lorraine (played by Jessica Jason Leigh), the billionaire owner of the state’s foremost debt collection agency.

Dot and Lorraine are at loggerheads with each other, with Wayne caught in the middle. However, all this “setup” changes face when Dot gets arrested in an innocuous incident. Her chequered past comes to the surface as it turns out that Dot was previously known as Nadine Bump. Her evil husband, Roy Tillman, Sheriff of Stark County, has been hunting her for decades.

When Dot’s prints show up in the system, Roy is alerted and throws everything he has at Dot to bring her back. Kidnapping efforts are spoiled when Dot shows her resilience and dexterity. The kidnapper, Ole Munch, police officers Indira and Witt Farr, and Lorraine’s lawyer Danish Greaves, are the other main characters in the ploy.

As the series progresses, we see our characters face numerous personal challenges that affect how they grow. The nature of the storytelling assumes a darker undertone as we go forward, although Fargo remains true to its brand identity. We have covered the entire show with detailed episodic recaps, which might prove to be helpful for viewers yet to watch the show.

Has Fargo been renewed for Season 6?

At the time of writing this piece, Fargo has not been renewed at FX for a sixth season. Given the positive reception and the pedigree of creative talent – and because Fargo is a fan favourite – things could change in the coming weeks.

Generally, FX, like other streamers and network cables, gauges numerous metrics before renewing a show, including how many people initially watch it and then looking at the drop-off rate. With some shows, cancellations or renewals happen quickly (ala. Only Murders in the Building, Dark Winds etc.) Other times, it can take months before streamers decide a show’s future.

Season 5 of Fargo is still very fresh, having just concluded recently. FX hasn’t been too keen on producing one season after the other, instead focusing on quality. The gestation period has increased since the first season. So it will be completely normal if there is radio silence in the next couple of years before an announcement for a new season is made.

Noah Hawley or other executives from FX have not gotten a chance to elaborate upon their intentions for a sixth season yet. Hawley did indicate that he “hasn’t run out of stories to tell” in an interview he did with Deadline some weeks back. Having said all that, we are very confident about the renewal. Nothing is certain at this moment, though since things can change so quickly in this business. But Fargo Season 6 should be a reality…it’s just that we don’t know when. We will update this page as more information is available.

What do we know about Season 6 so far:

Not much is known about Fargo Season 6 as FX has not officially renewed the show. However, if that does happen, we can expect the new instalment to boast a completely new story, given the trend till now.

The anthology format should mean that no one can really predict the plot. Previous seasons have shown how diverse the settings of the plot have been. We can expect anything to happen – a story set in the ’80s/’90s or perhaps even further back.

That is all the information we have for our readers at this point. If we get a renewal, expect the new season to come out sometime in 2026. Or maybe even later. All loyal fans of Fargo will still be steeped in anticipation because we know deep down that another season is in the offing.
