Country Queen is the first Kenyan series on Netflix, armed with an intriguing story diving into family drama and corruption.

What is Country Queen about?

Country Queen is a six episode drama, focusing on Akisa, a woman who has a new life away from her childhood village. When she returns home to visit her ailing father, she finds the place much-changed from before. A mining company has discovered gold nearby and is exploiting the land for its treasure.

Akisa finds herself drawn into the middle of this conflict, as she’s forced to confront her past and decide what direction to take her life.

Has Country Queen been renewed for season 2?

At the time of writing, Country Queen has not been renewed for a second season. Given the ending though, that could well change. After all, Country Queen (another African Original) has been renewed for two seasons.

Generally Netflix gauge numerous metrics before renewing a show, including how many people initially watch it and then looking at the drop-off rate. With some shows, cancellations or renewals happen quickly (ala. Squid Game, Bridgerton & Irregulars) Other times, it can take months before Netflix make a decision over a show’s future.

So far, Country Queen has had a pretty mixed reception from both critics and audiences alike, with some criticizing the show for dragging out its story across too many episodes.

Based on the ending and Netflix’s continued desire to expand international, we’re going out on a limb and predicting that Country Queen will be renewed for a second season.

We’ll be sure to update this section with accurate details over the coming weeks and months when we know more!

What we know about season 2 so far:

Barely anything is known about season 2 at this point, given Netflix have not green-lit a sequel. The conclusion does open things up for a follow-up though.

If this one is renewed, expect the story to continue on, with Akisa returning and continuing to fight back against corruption.

  5. My wife and I spent a whole Saturday watching. We started around 11am and couldn’t stop till we saw the last episode around 5pm. Whoa!!! we loved it and we are looking forward to season 2. Really loved it.

  10. I really enjoyed this movie even though it did drag on. But the plot wad excellent however, I am African American, and I love African movie but that ending sucked and then there is no 2nd season I’m really disappointed in Netflix. Every time I start watching a good African Movie it gets canceled before a decent ending.

  12. I agree with an earlier commenter, this limbo following six great episodes, then not knowing if there’s going to be a second season, Ugh!!! It makes me not even want to watch any other short series.

  14. Not knowing if season 2 will be, this is one reason why I really hate watching a series on Netflix. This one captivated me and I truly enjoyed it. Now being told there might no be a season 2 makes me not want to watch another one. I mean really but its fine my ending is way better then any you can come up with. Thank you for giving us a big disappointment of a ending here leaving so many in limbo.

  22. Hello…I am looking forward to a Season 2. I to binge watched the series in 1 day. The series ended with a lot of unanswered questions for the audeience I thought. It was certainly not a clean ending and therefore must have a Season 2 and perhaps a Season 3. It is like a good book that you read and you can’t put it down. You keep reading to see what the next chapter holds. So that being said, I want to watch and see when it gets to the really good parts.

  29. This is what makes me mad. I get all involved in a series with an obvious incomplete ending and no firm continuing season. I have watched the first two episodes and LOVED it, read the summaries for the others and realized it was not going to have an wrapped up ending so unfortunately, I am not going to get teased any further and am stopping at the first two. If a season two does happen, i will go back to season one where I left off and continue.

I saw one of the reviews saying that it was too slow moving, but it is actually deep and thoughtful and respectful and connects to political times and truths as well as deep love, betrayal, generational trauma and so much more. Come on Netflix, this is the kind of programming we need.

  49. Loved Country Queen I am from Kenya and was excited to see the house we lived in
    at Karen featured in episode 4 both inside and outside of the lovely house.
    I think the Netflix series was world class and the Swahili that was spoken had English subtitles.
    The story was a little bit long but still it showed what life is like in Nairobi and the villages in Kenya. I never knew that there are informal gold miners who I imagine work under unhealthy conditions and get exploited. Episode 6 ends and leaves it open for more series. Please continue with more episodes.

  50. We definitely need a season two! Season 1 was captivates due excellent storyline and acting! We want to know if Josiah is their son! Whether Vivienne and Max were charged with murder of Vivienne’s first husband! Also how the villages fought to Maintain their land from the greedy investors etc!

  70. I lived in Kenya for over 10 years where I met my husband whom is also Kenyan. I loved this movie. So beautiful. It made me cry because I miss Kenya so much. Such a wonderful movie and incredible country. Please renew!!! Loved the Kenyan actors too!
