Has Beacon 23 been renewed for Season 2? Here’s what we know:

Renewed or Cancelled?

Beacon 23 is one of MGM’s first sci-fi shows this year. Coming from the author who gave us Silo, the show has recently finished its first eight-episode long season. Lena Headey and Stephan James are seen portraying the central characters, Aster and Halan, respectively, while Natasha Mumba plays a supporting role.

If you’ve been watching this one, you may be wondering if this has been renewed or cancelled. Here’s what we know so far:

What is Beacon 23 Season 1 about?

Season 1 of Beacon 23 is set on the namesake Beacon in space. These are akin to light towers that help passing spaceships navigate the deadly black matter present at random places in space. During one of these cursory passings, Halan, who is a rogue military operative, saves the life of Aster Calyx after her ship explodes. Everyone on board is dead but Aster survives. Bart, the AI who controls the beacon’s systems, accuses Halan of killing its first beacon keeper, Solomon.

Aster is sceptical but persists with her instinct which tells her to trust Halan. As the series progresses, we see the history of the beacon being built up by flashbacks. The core conceit of Beacon 23 revolves around Milan Aleph’s search for a phenomenon called The Artefact and the connection that Halan and Aster have to it. Milan is introduced as the CEO of QTA, a multi-billionaire corporation that owns these beacons.

As the series progresses, we see our characters face numerous personal challenges that affect how they grow. We have covered the entire show with detailed episodic recaps, which might prove to be helpful for viewers yet to watch the show.

Has Beacon 23 been renewed for Season 2?

Beacon 23 has been renewed at MGM for a second season. The news was officially confirmed by the network after Season 1 wrapped up its maiden airing.

Generally, MGM, like other streamers and network cables, gauges numerous metrics before renewing a show, including how many people initially watch it and then looking at the drop-off rate. With some shows, cancellations or renewals happen quickly (ala. Only Murders in the Building, Dark Winds etc.) Other times, it can take months before streamers decide a show’s future.

However, the confirmation about the show’s renewal has come promptly. Michael Wright, head of MGM+, said that the filming for Season 2 was completed parallel to that of the first season, giving us hopes of the new season being released soon. He added:

“The creative team behind Beacon 23 has masterfully brought Hugh Howey’s best-selling book to life, and we’re excited for fans to continue this journey into Beacon 23’s universe of suspense, emotion and unforeseen twists.”

Glen Mazzara and Joy Blake will continue to serve as showrunners for Season 2. We have a clip for you that MGM+ has released – a teaser for the new season. However, we are sad to report that Headey does not feature prominently in it, indicating that her character has been killed off.

Mazzara expressed his delight at continuing to tell the story of Beacon 23. Excerpts from an interview that THR did with him and Blake are quoted below:

“Beacon 23’s season two ups the game: more action, more mysteries, more twists and exciting new characters. It’s a thrill ride. I can’t wait for the audience to see it.” (Blake) “I’m so grateful to MGM+ for continuing the story of Beacon 23. What an incredible opportunity for us to tell the stories of such unexpected characters whose lives are inextricably linked by a place that few understand, and none can ever leave.”

What do we know about Season 2 so far:

The showrunners and the clip have confirmed that James and Mumba will be back. Headey doesn’t feature too much in that teaser which raises doubts if her character died at the end of Season 1. We cannot say anything for sure, as of now.

Do not expect most of the cast members to return for the next season. This is primarily due to the nature of the show and the requirements of the story. In their comments, the creators added that a host of new characters await the audiences in Season 2, which indicates a reshuffling of the roster. Ellen Wong’s name has been revealed as a pivotal addition to the cast. The Canadian actress also features heavily in the teaser clip.

MGM+ has also released a short brief about the plot of Season 2, although it is too ambiguous to draw any conclusions. Aleph’s character will feature more prominently, which might make Eric Lange a series regular. The release is reproduced below:

“Beacon 23 is now little more than a prison with Aleph onboard, and The Artifact provides more questions than answers. Without a clear path forward, the inhabitants of Beacon 23 must rely on each other, but their conflicting agendas may get in the way.”

That is all the information we have for our readers at this point. The teaser does not give us a release date but confirms, however, that the new season will be released next year. We expect it to come out in April or somewhere near the summertime.
