Has War Sailor been renewed for Season 2? Here’s what we know:

Renewed Or Cancelled?

Netflix’s War Sailor is earning rave praise for its soaking and intense depiction of Norwegian merchant ships suffering unwittingly in the crossfire of WWII. At just three episodes long, the series focuses on a very specific part of the war that many of us do not know. War Sailor follows another Norwegian film that came to Netflix a while ago centering around the same setting but with a differentiated plot called Narvik.

If you’ve been following this one, you may be wondering if this has been renewed or cancelled. Here’s what we know:

What is War Sailor Season 1 about?

The series centres around Norway’s unwitting and unwilling participation in WWII, especially its naval merchant ships. Freddy (Kristoff Joner), a family man, takes a sailor’s job before the war begins with his best friend Sigbjorn (Pal Sverre Hagen).

That is when the war begins in 1941. He and thousands of other Norwegians have to wait years to learn their fate, which is out of their hands. Freddy and his family go through many upheavals as the war intensifies and their lives are put in danger. Eventually, the story becomes about the possibility of them reuniting but then throwing up the question if that really was the best outcome.

The tragic war uprooted many homes and destroyed umpteen families but War Sailor makes a strong case for those who got involved unjustly and non-consensually. Even though the Netflix series is holistically about Norway, it more specifically plants the narrative seeds on an individual level to accentuate its hardened character study.

Has War Sailor been renewed for season 2?

At the time of writing, War Sailor has not been renewed for a second season. Given the nature of the show’s content, we do not think War Sailor will get renewed. The series has been refashioned into a series for international audiences and only a few more parts have been added to the original.

Generally, Netflix gauge numerous metrics before renewing a show, including how many people initially watch it and then looking at the drop-off rate. The completion rate is one of the most important metrics though, as recently revealed with the shock cancellation of 1899. One could argue the short run-time is to ensure more people to watch the show.

We feel that given how the story ends, the series is complete in itself and does not require a sequel. Moreover, as we mentioned, War Sailor is actually a movie converted into a television series without too many cosmetic changes.

With all that in mind, we’re pretty confident in saying that War Sailor will not be renewed for season 2. Not for creative reasons but because the story stands complete as it is and the makers have no intention to go forward with another story.
