Under the Queen’s Umbrella is the latest weekend K-drama that’s slowly become one of the most engrossing historical dramas of the year. Boasting a lovely blend of drama, romance and court drama, there’s lots to like here. If you’ve been following this one, you may be wondering if this has been renewed or cancelled. Here’s what we know:

What is Under The Queens Umbrella Season 1 about?

Under The Queens Umbrella is the latest weekend K-drama to hit Netflix and it’s certainly shaping up to be a really interesting watch.

The story takes place deep in the Joseon Era, and within the palace exists troublemaking princes who cause nothing but headaches for the royal family. In particular for their mother, the Queen Hwa-Ryeong who’s supposed to act with grace and dignity, but for her sons playing up. Understandably, she ends up exasperated and sensitive.

Every day of her life is full of trials and challenges but perhaps none are more challenging than simultaneously helping to run a Kingdom and raise two troublesome kids! Will she succeed?

Has Under the Queen’s Umbrella been renewed for season 2?

At the time of writing, tvN and Netflix have not renewed Under the Queen’s Umbrella for season 2. Given the ratings over the weeks, it’ll be interesting to see if they actually do renew this for a follow-up.

The ratings began with a pretty decent 7.6% share nationwide but since then, the show has been steadily increasing, with highs of 14% for episode 14! The ratings have been a real surprise and it’s perhaps unsurprising that these later chapters have been full of drama and intrigue.

Despite the ratings, it’s extremely rare to find Korean dramas renewed for another season. That has changed in recent years but given the sheer wealth of talent in this that are sure to move onto other projects, we predict that Under the Queen’s Umbrella will not be renewed for a second season.

What we know about season 2 so far:

Barely anything is known about season 2 right now. Given most Korean dramas are reserved to one season, it’s rare to find these renewed. With the rare exception of ongoing Netflix shows (Love ft. Marriage and Divorce, Hospital Playlist etc.) then it seems unlikely that this one will be renewed.

Having said that though, we have seen Taxi Driver and Tale of the Nine Tailed renewed recently, alongside Alchemy of Souls too. Given how steady the ratings are for this series, could we see this one buck the trend? Right now it seems unlikely.

There is always the possibility that the actors return for a follow-up for a sequel or a spin-off featuring the same characters but considering all of this, we believe this will not be renewed.

  7. YES PLEASE!!!!!!!! I am definitely 👍🏻 for a season 2. Great story, Great characters and the writers definitely left the story open for more. Even though the wicked Queen Dowager is dead, there is still the Prince Using (not correct spelling) and his Mom and Queen Yoon. The pregnant crown princess, the other princes
    Mischievousness, the royal grand children and the prince that is a woman at heart , And the other 2 princes that anre living now outside the palace walls, are all good stories to cap into. I hope for season 2 , I love our heroine The Queen, may she reign for another season!!

  8. On the question of whether to renew UNDER THE QUEEN’S UMBRELLA, for and against:
    For :
    What a great cast !
    What a great execution in terms of costumes, dramaturgy, direction of the actors.
    Against:
    The central theme of motherhood, and the problems the queen faces to bring her children into a safe situation, has in a way been brought to a close. This theme was one that any parent could relate to, hence the attraction to many people. It was also modern, in that placing the queen as the central character and showing the power of these strong women (also having the dowager queen as the strong adversary) as determinate was a happy change from the usual depiction in Asian series of the male characters : king/warriors/ministers as those whose actions rule. The problem for those who wish to renew the show will be to find another theme as engrossing and as intriguingly oblique as this one.
    I really loved the show and would like to see a season 2, but only if it comes back as strong as the first season. Also, some more care could be taken with the subtitles.

  11. Yes please renew for session 2! I usually don’t watch these type of shows but it was so well done and the story line just pulled me in episode after episode. Please renew for season 2.

  12. I am a Asian Drama lover. I love the movies and period pieces. I was soo involved with watching Under the Queen’s Umbrella, very disappointed when it was unavailable. Researched it and now I know why. “Bummer” please renew for Season 2.

  14. Before I began to watch, Under the Queens Umbrella…I said this seem like my kind of K drama…I was so right this is definitely a rewatch. Please give more seasons with this amazing show. I love it , I will keep it on my list for rewatch….AWESOMENESS IN THE MAKINGS!❤️🙏

    Good quality acting love the period pieces I wish Netflix would do more of them!!
    When so many people love this show there’s no reason not to bring it back for another season. It would be silly not to $$

Yes , Awesome cast and as the Queen seemed to say alot YESSSSS make more , There is so much more this may go on with , Will the Grand Princess and Princess have a boy or girl , Will the prince who left , ever return for a visit and if so will he return as a lady , Will her heart be okay during delivery , How will life turn out for the prince who decide to keep his daughter and raise her himself , will he marry the Childs mother and many more things . This is a awesome series and very Much Hope they will do a season 2 wishful thinking 3 456 :)

I can’t express enough on how much we need the season 2 and then some the queen the sons the king even the mother queen they are hell of actors and actresses the hate the happiness the sad I was at the edge of my seat every second ci don’t know who we have to do a petition to but let me know I don’t watch soaps and I hate subtitles but I was all in this please please let it happen

  25. I would love to watch not only Season 2, 3,4,5, Ect. I would love to see the baby of the Grand Prince and Princess. If she fares well during and after giving birth. Also see the late Grand Prince’s children grow up to be adults. My request for continued Seasons. Also to see how the Prince fares that left the palace to fly free in life.

  26. In this day and age it is hard to find quality TV dramas or shows. The quality of the actors and the way their stories are conveyed leaves you wanting for more! Why would you give the Queens royal subjects what they ask for, and that’s more of Under The Queens Unbrella.

  29. Please, please I beg you, let there be a season 2 of Under The Queens Umbrella as I’m having withdrew symptons already. I absolutely love all the historical dramas from Korea which I have seen all from Netflix. You can’t leave me over the Xmas holiday without something enthralling to watch.

  33. I have watched hundreds of korean tv shows and this tops them all, i really wish this was a 50 plus episide like the chinese dramas. For once, tis series could have had other storylines in there, multiple couples, love triangles, jealousy, etc the cross dressing was just a tease, that story could have deepened even more. I hate this emperess dowager like no other emperess dowager in all asian historical series Ive ever watched. I hope someone gets to slap her face really hard in the last episode. REALLY HARD.
