Renewed Or Cancelled?
The Sympathizer is the latest Max Original, blending history and drama together into a really intriguing miniseries. So after watching it in its entirety, you may be wondering if this has been renewed or cancelled. Here’s what we know:
What is The Sympathizer about?
The Sympathizer revolves after the haydays of the Vietnam war where a North Vietnamese spy, planted in the South Vietnam army, is forced to flee to the enemy country of the United States along with his general. As he mingles with the South Vietnamese refugees, living a double life, it’s only a matter of time before he finds himself conflicted between his drastically paradoxical selves.
The Sympathizer is a historical black comedy based on Vietnamese/ American novelist Viet Thanh Nguyen’s 2015 Pulitzer prize winning novel of the same name. To top it off, the series flaunts a star cast with Hoa Xuande Nguyen in the main role of the Captain, Robert Downey Jr. in multiple disguises or roles and many others, including Sandra Oh in a recurring role.
Has The Sympathizer been renewed for season 2?
At the time of writing, The Sympathizer has not been renewed for season 2. Generally Max would gauge numerous metrics before renewing a show, including how many people initially watch it and then looking at the drop-off rate.
With some shows, cancellations or renewals happen quickly. Other times, it can take months before a decision over a show’s future is made.
So far, The Sympathizer has had a pretty good reaction from critics and audiences alike, with some commenting on the romance but largely lamenting the writing, which is pretty stale, all things considered.
Given the way this show is set up, we’re predicting that this will not be renewed for a second season. The series does have plenty of potential but we also know that studios are tightening their purse-strings this year thanks to the strikes. Furthermore, this has been billed as a miniseries too.
What we know about season 2 so far:
Barely anything is known about season 2 at this point as Max haven’t officially renewed this one. Should it be renewed, we’d imagine that it’ll be commissioned with another 7 episodes and continue the same story as before.
