What is The Serpent Queen about?

The Serpent Queen is the latest historical drama to hit our screens; a darkly satirical look at Catherine de’ Medici, who marries into the French court as an orphaned teenager expected to bring in a fortune in dowry and produce heirs.

Unfortunately, this dream is shattered when Catherine discovers that her husband is actually in love with an older woman and she cannot conceive children. Catherine attempts to keep her marriage going – and rule France for thirty years.

Has The Serpent Queen been renewed for season 2?

At the time of writing, The Serpent Queen has not been renewed for season 3. Generally Starz would gauge numerous metrics before renewing a show, including how many people initially watch it and then looking at the drop-off rate.

With some shows, cancellations or renewals happen quickly. Other times, it can take months before a decision over a show’s future is made.

So far, The Serpent Queen has had a rather muted reaction from critics and audiences alike, with many not liking this storyline as much as the first time around.

Given the way this show is set up, we’re predicting that this will not be renewed for a third season. The series does have plenty of potential but we also know that ratings are a big part of Starz’s strategy and we’ve seen other shows cancelled for less.

 

What we know about season 3 so far:

Barely anything is known about season 3 at this point, given Starz have not green-lit a sequel. The ending certainly opens this up to a more ambiguous third season.

Expect more fourth-wall breaking, drama, political scheming and shades of romance throughout if this is renewed. In terms of a release, it should drop around September-October time in 2025.

  2. As long as factual history isn’t important, the Serpent Queen MUST be renewed!. The acting and story are hugely entertaining, and Samantha Morton makes pure treachery almost justifiable. Well done, cast and crew! I hope we see what else she can pull out of her sleeve. (Notice the people who suddenly revived at the end? Begging for another round.)

  4. Please give us another season. This show is spectacular in every way. Samantha Morton is incredible as are all the other actors. I will not continue a Starz subscription without this show. It is what keeps me engaged with Starz.

  5. Absolutely let there be a 3rd series of the serpent queen! I’m a huge Samantha morton fan and think she’s fantastic in this and there’s do much more to be told!! …also the theme tune sounds very much like the harlots theme tune! Or is that just me
