Has The Idol been renewed for Season 2? Here’s what we know:

Renewed Or Cancelled?

HBO’s The Idol created controversy when it first premiered at Cannes. For a time, the show was all television reviewers could talk about. The hype around Lily-Rose Depp’s first major plunge into stardom was eagerly awaited. But ever since the first season of The Idol finished, viewers have felt shortchanged.

The Idol was promised as an avant-garde, insightful and tasteful look at the mechanics of the music industry. One of the modern-day’s most prolific and influential pop stars, The Weeknd, was at the project’s helm along with Euphoria creator Sam Levinson. None of the hype materialized into a substantial show, however. The Idol, embroiled in the vanity of its own pretence, kept viewers at a distance.

If you’ve finished watching this one, you may be wondering if this has been renewed or cancelled. Here’s what we know so far:

What is The Idol Season 1 about?

Jocelyn is a young pop star who is struggling after her mother’s death. Her mental issues keep compounding as the gaping hole in her heart and life remains unfilled. This impacts her marketability and professional life, which hangs in the balance.

She is unable to overcome the expectations of others. That is, until, she meets Tedros at a club. Although it is not clear what he really does, Tedros has a knack for spotting and training musical talents like no other. However, both his methods and his rattail are questionable.

Tedros does yields results, which may be why Jocelyn falls head over heels for him. He and his “followers” move into Jocelyn’s house to inspire her and bring her back on track. Somewhere along the way, the distinction between real and fictitious becomes blurred, leading to extravagant realities.

Has The Idol been renewed for season 2?

At the time of writing, HBO has not renewed The Idol for a second season. Da’Vine Joy Randolph, who played Destiny on the show, recently shared HBO’s probable plans for a second season. She said:

I think that everyone’s intention is to have a second season. This was never intended to be a limited series. HBO has been very happy with it — so much so that there were rumours that we were cancelled, and then HBO went on Twitter, which I think they rarely do. Nothing is official, but HBO is quite happy. In regards to your theory, yes, there will be a turning the table, and I think a really exciting setup of entering into Season 2 because I think a lot of Season 1 was to set up the world that not many people know because it’s very complicated.”

Season 1 did not leave many subplots unresolved so the ending seems mostly complete. However, the shocking twist at the end might force us to revisit the first season to look for easter eggs and clues. But will there be a Season 2?

No, is the answe to that. The show is just bad and creatively, there is not a lot of story to build upon. In a recent Variety article, it was revealed that this one has now officially been cancelled.

What we know about season 2 so far:

Not much is known about season 2 at the time of writing, given HBO has officially cancelled this one. Unless this is picked up by another studio, it seems this is the end of the road for this HBO Original.
