What is The Empress about?

Elisabeth is wed to the Emperor of Austria, Franz in an unexpected turn of events. Originally, Elisabeth’s sister Helene was supposed to marry the Emperor but a chance meeting and love at first sight changed things.

While season 1 focused on this reconciliation of the Empress’ free-spirited worldview and the restrictive walls of royalty, the second season explores the reason behind her declining mental health and the challenges faced as a mother.

Has The Empress been renewed for season 2?

At the time of writing, The Empress has not been renewed for season 3. Generally Netflix would gauge numerous metrics before renewing a show, including how many people initially watch it and then looking at the drop-off rate.

With some shows, cancellations or renewals happen quickly. Other times, it can take months before a decision over a show’s future is made. So far, The Empress has had a really good reaction online from critics and audiences alike, with many enjoying the continuation of the story and the developments for each character.

Given the way this show is set up, and the ending we receive, we’re predicting that this will be renewed for a third season. The ending leaves the door wide open for a potential follow-up, and we also know that this one is really popular with audiences too.

However, we could be completely wrong too, so take our prediction with a pinch of salt!

What could happen in Season 3?

Barely anything is known about The Empress season 3 at this point. Given the show hasn’t been officially renewed, we’re still somewhat in the dark over where the story could go. Obviously the main cast would return for this one, and we’d likely get another 8 episodes too.

It’s unclear whether the Archduke would factor into season 3, though the writers do have a good opportunity here to tell his tragic tale in Mexico.

For now though, we’ll have to wait and see what Netflix announce with this one.
