What is The Breakthrough Season 1 about?
The Breakthrough begins with the double murder of an eight-year-old boy and an elderly woman in the small town of Linkoping. Detective John makes a promise of quickly finding the killer and traps himself in the case. Ignoring the strains on his marriage and his reputation, he rigorously investigates for 16 years.
Things do not look promising till John learns of the Golden State Killer being caught 44 years later thanks to ancestry mapping. Desperate, the detective enlists the help of genealogist, Per who is a history buff and has his own way of working. As they clash heads, the threat of time looms over them as the investigation is to be handed to the cold case unit in a matter of days.

Has The Breakthrough Been Renewed for Season 2?
At the time of writing, Netflix hasn’t renewed The Breakthrough for a Season 2.
Netflix tends to look at views and the drop-off rates before renewing or cancelling the show, along with the critical success. Some shows are instantly renewed like One Piece and Bridgerton while others take years such as The Watcher and The Victim’s Game.
However, The Breakthrough is labeled as a limited series which means it has been ordered for only 1 season. So, it is unlikely that we will get a renewal update anytime soon.
What do we know about The Breakthrough Season 2?
Not much is known about The Breakthrough Season 2 at the moment given that it has not been greenlit. The show ends with the killer being caught, Per being acknowledged and John patching up with his son. A Season 2 would have to look at another true crime case or a fictional one where John and Per team up again to catch the killer.
