Has Special Ops: Lioness been renewed for Season 2? Here’s what we know:

Renewed Or Cancelled?

Special Ops: Lioness marks the fourth very “Special” collaboration between Taylor Sheridan and Paramount. The prolific American filmmaker has time and again proved to be Paramount’s hidden ace. And his work on Lioness also evoked a positive response from audiences. Zoe Saldana, Laysla De Oliveira, and Stephanie Nur star in pivotal roles in what is essentially a spy drama.

The explosive finale of Special Ops: Lioness Season 1 just premiered recently. Reactions from fans have been the most positive through the show’s eight-week run. They want more of the story and Joe’s missions to continue. But is Special Ops returning for a second season?

If you’ve finished watching this one, you may be wondering if this has been renewed or cancelled. Here’s what we know so far:

What is Special Ops: Lioness Season 1 about?

Special Ops: Lioness is about a combative division within the CIA’s Special Operations wing headed by Joe (Saldana). Her “Lionesses” are undercover agents who infiltrate terrorist organizations to eliminate significant marks, even if it comes at the cost of their own lives.

Joe’s job is tough but her role as a mother in the household is even tougher. She has to deal with spending time away from her family for long stretches of time, leaving her husband Neal, who is a doctor, to manage the load alone. As a consequence, Kate, her teenage daughter, rebelliously acts out against her.

Asmar Amrohi runs Qudrah Petrol, one of the world’s largest oil suppliers. But he is also the biggest financial bank for funding terrorist operations across the world. He is on the CIA’s kill list and Joe embarks on a new operation to hire an agent and eliminate him.

She recruits Cruz Manuelos, who joined the Marines a while back as a recourse to escaping her abusive past. Cruz is top of her class and displays exemplary physical prowess and combative training. However, she is not really trained as an undercover agent, which Joe tries to rectify with harsh assignments. Cruz mixes up with Aaliyah, Amrohi’s daughter, to get closer to him.

But during the course of the mission, Cruz and Aaliyah fall for each other romantically. Cruz is caught between following her human instincts and following orders to kill the father of the woman she loves.

Has Special Ops: Lioness been renewed for season 2?

At the time of writing, Paramount has not renewed Special Ops: Lioness for a second season. Given the nature of this series, that could change if it does good numbers for the network.

Generally Paramount, like other networks and streaming platforms, gauges numerous metrics before renewing a show, including how many people initially watch it and then looking at the drop-off rate. With some shows, cancellations or renewals happen quickly (ala. Squid Game, Bridgerton etc.) Other times, it can take months before Netflix make a decision over a show’s future.

Season 1 of Special Ops: Lioness has constantly topped charts for Paramount Plus ever since its release. The show is currently one of the most binged television series on the platform, also raking up impressive rankings on IMDb’s popularity list. The positive reaction from fans and critics will prove to be significantly influential come decision time.

Given the ongoing strikes and near-term uncertainty, we do not expect Paramount to come out with a decision soon. However, whenever they do make an announcement, we expect it to be for the renewal of Special Ops: Lioness for Season 2. Sheridan’s most recent project before Special Ops: Lioness, Tulsa King, was a smashing hit for Paramount and a second season received the green light. We expect the same to happen for Special Ops as well.

We’ll be sure to update this section with accurate details over the coming weeks and months when we know more!

What we know about season 2 so far:

Not much is known about Season 2 at the time of writing, given Paramount has not officially renewed this one yet. Should the network decide to greenlight this one, we can expect a new storyline to be introduced in the second season.

We do not expect to see many characters to return in the next season. Joe, her team, and senior CIA officials should be back, though. If the series is continued, expect to see another “Lioness” take shape in the next season.

As for the release date, the ongoing strikes will play spoilsport for a while. A 2024 release is too optimistic at this given point but 2025 should be a realistic target for Paramount to release Season 2 of Special Ops: Lioness if it is renewed.

  2. I think the show is awesome keeps you wanting to keep watching, although I do believe they can get rid of Nicole Kidman it seem like she wasn’t really into that acting job. but all in all it was an excellent first season hopefully season two will be even better.💯

  3. Just Brilliant! Kept me watching the episodes like turning pages in a book! Absolutely loved the cast and the entire show. Please bring it back sooner than 2025. Best military series I’ve seen in a while.

  7. Being a highly trained Vietnam Army veteran, I enjoyed this series…BUT, the “F-bombs” were far, far too much. There is absolutely no need to disgrace a good show by using such verbiage. Clean up the vulgarity so we can enjoy a solid performance. It’s very offensive

  8. I’m hoping the second see it this season of lioness returns I could barely wait for each episode to come and I was disappointed when there was only eight I hope the characters return

  9. 2025 is to long to have to wait for this fantastic, sometimes nail biting, show. Please bring it back sooner than later. Btw isn’t it based off a true story?
