Payback is an intriguing and politically charged thriller, armed with a story steeped in vengeance and backstabbings. If you’ve been following this one, you may be wondering if this has been renewed or cancelled. Here’s what we know:

What is Payback Season 1 about?

Payback is the latest revenge-driven K-drama, centering on Eun-yong and his nephew Tae-chun. The pair find themselves entangled in a big conspiracy with a prolific loan shark known as Myung In-ju and GMI Bank owner Oh Chang-hyun. A tense game of cat and mouse ensues, with wildcard Joon-kyung thrown into the mix.

Eun-yong is a money trader, tired of oppression and the corrupt nature of authorities and refuses to remain silent. Business is certainly going to pick up in this drama!

Has Payback been renewed for season 2?

At the time of writing, SBS have not renewed Payback for season 2. Given the ratings over the weeks, it’ll be interesting to see if they actually do renew this for a follow-up.

The ratings began with a pretty decent 8.7% share nationwide but since then, the show has been pretty steady over time, with the later episodes hitting the top 3 for all K-dramas in the nation.

Despite the ratings, it’s extremely rare to find Korean dramas renewed for another season. That has changed in recent years but given the sheer wealth of talent in this that are sure to move onto other projects, we predict that Payback will not be renewed for a second season.

What we know about season 2 so far:

Barely anything is known about season 2 right now. Given most Korean dramas are reserved to one season, it’s rare to find these sort of shows renewed. With the rare exception of ongoing Netflix shows (Love ft. Marriage and Divorce, Hospital Playlist etc.) then it seems unlikely that this one will be renewed.

Having said that though, we have seen Taxi Driver and Tale of the Nine Tailed renewed recently, alongside Alchemy of Souls too. Given how steady the ratings are for this series, could we see this one buck the trend? It seems very unlikely that Payback will, but we do generally aim to update this page when more information becomes available.
