Renewed or Cancelled?
Hijack has finished its thrilling first season in some style. We were all expecting the finale to be an explosive affair with so many things to look forward to. And Apple TV+ has not disappointed. The show overall saw strong traction on the streaming platform and has ranked number 1 since its fourth episode. We have unpacked its finale for you here, while also sharing our thoughts on the overall season here.
If you’ve finished watching this one, you may be wondering if this has been renewed or cancelled. Here’s what we know so far:
What is Hijack Season 1 about?
Hijack revolves around the hijacking of Flight 29 which takes off from Dubai for London. The crew who enact it are all British and part of a terrorist organization. But they aren’t terrorists as such as each individual has been recruited against their will under coercion.
Among the 200-odd passengers is Sam Neil (Elba), a hardcore negotiator with an unorthodox work profile. He seems tailor-made for this situation and leads efforts to ensure the plane lands safely with no one getting killed.
Although Sam has self-interest at the forefront of his initiative, he also tries his best to navigate the situation for some of the ill-equipped passengers using his skill set. While the hijacking unfolds at its own pace in the air, down on the ground, British counterterrorism and Metropolitan PD scamper for answers. Eventually, the desired outcome is not just the release of two high-ranking members of the terrorist organisation but something more vile and revolting.
Has Hijack been renewed for Season 2?
At the time of writing, Apple TV+ has not renewed Hijack for a second season. Given the nature of this series, that could change if there is some positivity from the side of the creators and its frontline A-list star.
Generally, Apple TV Plus, like other cable networks and streamers, gauges numerous metrics before renewing a show, including how many people initially watch it and then looking at the drop-off rate. With some shows, cancellations or renewals happen quickly (ala. Squid Game, Bridgerton etc.) Other times, it can take months before streamers like Apple TV Plus make a decision over a show’s future.
Season 1 of Hijack has become the streamers’ best-watched tv series in the last month. There are no doubts about how much people and critics have loved the show. Although Apple hasn’t made a decision yet, Idris Elba had some thoughts on what a second season could look like.
“What would be the acceptable scenario that [Sam] comes back? I’d like that, but I just don’t want to put him on another hijack. I’m open to that character coming back. I think if people were compelled to like the character, then I’m in. I’d like to see Sam come back, but I just don’t want to see another Hijack. It’s got to be clever, and we can see him make decisions that are impossible to make. And I think that’s going to be fun for the audience, but it has to be the right setup. So who knows? If the audience really wants it, it’s going to happen.”
The actor cleverly championed the cause of his resourceful protagonist and wants to see Sam in a “different setting” if he is to come back at all. And that is the only concern for the viewers as of now.
We do think it is unlikely the show will get renewed. Despite such amazing ratings and a thumbs up from us, Hijack’s season 1 is a pretty complete story. Sam Nelson coming back would ruin our memory of him from the hijacking and a simple drama around his life may not live up to expectations.
We’ll be sure to update this section with accurate details over the coming weeks and months when we know more!
What do we know about Season 2 so far:
Not much is known about season 2 at the time of writing, given Apple TV Plus has not officially renewed this one yet. Should the streamers decide to greenlight a second season, it’s fair to assume that we will pick up in the aftermath of what happened at the end of the series or perhaps start off with a new tangent altogether.
With regards to Season 2, it’s likely that Apple TV Plus will make an official announcement several months from now, once the final viewing figures are in. Do not wait for the show’s renewal though as we think it is unlikely Apple TV will renew Hijack. We’ll be sure to update this section when an official announcement is made by Apple TV.

Season 1 of Hihack was amazing I love everything about the series, but it definitely needs to be a movie instead of a series. It’s just too good to be a series
