Champion is the latest music drama on Netflix and BBC One, created by Candice Carty-Williams of ‘Queenie’ fame. It stars Deja J Bowens, Malcolm Kamulete, Nadine Marshall and Ray Fearon as the Champions, a Jamaican-British family that pits their kids against each other to keep up the family legacy.

This 8-episode series has been quite a dramatic venture and given its intriguing premise, it is too good to be a one-hit wonder. Well, after watching the show, you may be wondering if this has been renewed or cancelled. Here’s what we know:

What is Champion about?

Champion follows siblings, Bosco and Vita Champion as they navigate the London music scene. All her life, Vita has been in the shadows, giving up her dreams to keep Bosco in the spotlight. But after he pushes her to her limit, she decides to make a name for herself. Meanwhile, Bosco is a fading rapper who has been struggling after coming out of prison. His father only sees him as a brand while the love of his life is engaged to his former manager who is now managing his rival.

And in the midst of it all are the Champion parents, trying to keep their family afloat but failing miserably. Beres Champion is all about tough love and trying to capitalise where he can. Meanwhile, Aria only seems to be focusing on her son, Bosco much to Vita’s chagrin and uses him as an excuse not to commit to her boyfriend.

Has Champion been renewed for season 2?

At the time of writing, Netflix has cancelled Champion for season 2 according to showrunner Candice Carty-Williams’s Instagram. 

It was first released by BBC One in 2023 before getting a global release on Netflix in January 2024. Both BBC and Netflix, like other distributing platforms, gauge numerous metrics before renewing a show, including how many people initially watch it and then looking at the drop-off rate.

With some BBC and Netflix Originals, cancellations or renewals happen quickly (ala. Peaky Blinders or The Missing). Other times, it can take months before a decision over a show’s future is made. 

What we know about season 2 so far:

Barely anything is known about Champion season 2 at this point. However, there are a lot of loose ends and subplots in season 1 that can be picked up if the show is miraculously renewed. Will Bosco end up in prison, rehab or an asylum? Will his family be able to free him?

How will this outcome affect him and all the progress he has made? Champion season 2 finale also saw Bulla looking concerned for Bosco which seems strange. What will he do? And how will all of this affect Vita and the roaring success she has just been experiencing? Well, Champion season 2 has enough material to give us another interesting instalment but at the moment a new season is unlikely.

  8. ABSOLUTELY, there needs to be a second season for Champion. I really enjoyed and loved the story line. Loved the acting and the patois spoken was really on point… Truly felt authentic to Jamaica. (scene captured in JA, loved it). 🇯🇲 🇯🇲 🇯🇲 ❤️❤️

  15. Nah, this isn’t competing with Power. Don’t get me wrong this was good and I’m keen for another season. But it’s 100% the UK version of Empire.

  16. This movie is sooo captivating. Came through it today and watched the whole of season one but got shocked when I reached the eighth episode and realized that there’s no more to play. At first, I thought my wifi was off and even reloaded the page but it turned out that there’s nothing more to watch. In my honest opinion, There’s really got to be another season or more episodes on season one cause the last of it (episode 8) show’s there’s more to expect and watch. So we want to know what’s next till and are eager to welcome some more captivating scenes and releases.

  17. There has to be AT LEAST another series. Absolutely amazing acting, storylines and music….and this is coming from someone who couldn’t abide rap to finally finding a style that I enjoy listening to!! No more Netflix for me if this doesn’t get continued. Boscombe & Vita for ever 🎤🎧🎶

    See it for what it is….. its hits audiences of all age groups. Its a pleasure and gripping series to watch. The acting has been A class it would a travesty to be left like this… Put UK series back on the map.

  28. I LOVED IT! CRAZY CRAZY CRAZY AND MOST FULFILLING. BEAUTIFUL STORY LINE, BEAUTIFUL ACTING, BEAUTIFUL MUSIC……. BEAUTIFUL EVERYTHING!

  32. I just finished Binge watching Champions once I started I couldn’t stop I watched all 8 episodes. The acting the storyline and the music were all sooooo goooood 🔥🔥🔥 I need season 2,3,4 and 5.

  33. I only paused watching this show to text fam and friends to tell them they need to watch this show. As a Jamaican transplant from a musical family, it was very relatable. The family drama I think anyone can relate to. Great music, great script, awesome actors. Please renew!!!! Season 2! Season 2!

    I am surprised by the way it finished, that season 2 is not already in filming
    You cannot write a show and leave it like so, it kinda negates the class of the venture

    Also Jnr story needs to be brought in and be made famous too. bringing the family together and stronger. I loved this series PLEASE BRING IT BACK

  42. YES! This series needs to continue. I was surprisingly locked in from the beginning. Season 1 was a Cliff hanger of course to keep us interested, so now that you peaked our interest the show must go on. There are too many loose ends, so please spread it out for several more seasons. If it must end, end it appropriately and link it to a new series so we can still endulge in the A1 music, actors w/actual acting skills, music, culture etc. I really love it and it’s a show I can and will refer to others to watch too

Just watched the 8 episodes…Definitely needs a season 2 to complete the family saga, music biz, and on to the future of the characters, that you get attached to, and relate to, if you are especially in the music biz in any capacity…Good acting, good writing, and very realistic…Here’s hoping for a second season! got my vote…

Just just finished watching season 1 of champion it was a great first season couldn’t stop watching watched all eight episodes in a run I love the characters I love the plot I love the story this was a great series music was great artists are awesome please renew this for a second season got to see what happens I hate for it to end like this got to find out what happens to Bosco and what happens with Vita and the family and Dad needs to get what he’s got coming to him and I’m trying to figure out why bulla looks so concerned we got to know what happens come on renew it for a second season
