Breathless (2024) aka Respira is another exciting Spanish Netflix Original that graced our screens this year. With exciting themes of steamy affairs, melodrama, betrayals and secrets, it’s for those who love medical dramas. The 8-episode series stars Najwa Nimri of Money Heist fame, Cable Girls’ Blanca Suarez and Borja Luna, Elite’s Manu Rios, movie star Aitana Sánchez-Gijón and more.

It is helmed by Carlos Montero Castiñeira who is known for the Spanish high school drama, Elite. With shocking revelations and plot twists, the season finale had viewers on the edge of their seats.

What is Breathless Season 1 about?

Despite being “selfless”, the doctors of Joaquin Sorolla Public Hospital are all selfish, doing whatever it takes for their own gain. Nestor Moa is the union representative who seemingly cares for patients but is ready to let them die for his ideals. He ends up clashing with Valencian President, Patricia who is loathe to take him on as her doctor. 

As for Dr. Pilar Amaro, she claims to be on the other end of the spectrum and will do whatever it takes to save a patient until it comes to her own son, even if it means letting a little girl die. And in between their clashing dynamic, the 1st-year residents struggle to stay afloat, save patients and also live their own lives.

Has Breathless Been Renewed for Season 2? 

At the time of writing, Netflix hasn’t renewed Breathless for a Season 2.

Netflix tends to look at views and the drop-off rates before renewing or cancelling the show, along with the critical success. Some shows are instantly renewed like One Piece and Bridgerton while others take years such as The Watcher and The Victim’s Game.

Breathless Season 1 also happens to have several loose ends and cliffhangers which means it was made with a Season 2 in mind. On top of it, Netflix Spain tends to create multi-season shows like Cable Girls, Elite and Money Heist, so we are quite optimistic.

What do we know about Breathless Season 2?

Not much is known about Breathless Season 2 at the moment given that it has not been greenlit. But there is a lot left to be answered such as what happens to Jesica who is last seen bleeding out. The Moa vs Patricia clash is still ongoing as she betrays him and reveals her intention to privatize Sorolla. We are yet to get some concrete answers on Leo’s son while Rocio has pretty much kidnapped her daughter.

This open ending allows for more material should the show be renewed. If the show does return, you can expect a season with approximately 8 episodes, each lasting around 50 minutes. However, nothing is confirmed yet, but we’ll be sure to update this page as soon as any new information comes in.
