Boxxo Is Abducted
Episode 4 of Reborn as a Vending Machine, I Now Wander the Dungeon starts with Boxxo off on another adventure. The director has hired a couple of guys to help reinforce the village walls. He wants the vending machine to set up shop there in the process. However, the guy who tried to steal from Boxxo several episodes back is actually part of the workforce. This rings alarm bells for Boxxo but 8 hours out the village, we learn that this is actually all one big ruse. These men actually intended to steal the machine.
Boxxo uses his camera to take a picture of the guys, as they demand Boxxo dish out food and drink. Damaging the vending machine sees Boxxo use his rebuilding skills, but of course restoring durability costs points. Boxxo instead decides to spend 1000 points to increase his toughness by 10 points, preventing damage from the villagers.
The group take the vending machine to a girl at a mansion called Hulemy. Boxxo was kidnapped so she could study him. Hulemy, if you’ll remember, is the person whom Lammis wanted to meet. She’s also deduced that Boxxo’s “Hello there” is code for yes. “Too bad” is code for no. Using this, Boxxo answers yes or no questions for Hulemy as she learns more about him.
Boxxo also shows off his abilities, including changing to a different machine and setting up a barrier around himself. When Hulemy falls asleep, the three guys return but Boxxo thinks fast and suddenly pops out three adult magazines. The guys decide they “need to use the bathroom” and hurry out the room.
In the morning Boxxo helps Hulemy out with some hair product and clothes. However, the mansion comes under attack. Hulemy is happy though, smirking as she realizes this is their chance to leave. It turns out it’s the Hunter Association, fronted by Lammis, who are dead set on getting Boxxo back. They all realize too late that the crooks have blastite hidden in the storehouse above. It explodes, but Boxxo uses his barrier to protect the pair. Of course it’s not going to last forever.
Boxxo opens up a gap in his barrier as he spots a big bag of gold coins the crooks had stolen. Hulemy snatches up the coins and puts them all into Boxxo, keeping the barrier running indefinitely. Hulemy starts to run out of oxygen. Thankfully, Boxxo turns into an oxygen machine, saves Hulemy, and it’s not long before he’s reunited with Lammis as well.
The Episode Review
Reborn as a Vending Machine returns with another amusing episode, this time with a little subplot that sees Boxxo kidnapped and off on an adventure with Hulemy. The worldbuilding is a bit better this time, and there’s certainly some amusing moments.
Seeing Boxxo save Hulemy’s life through the power of adult magazines is a particular highlight, while Boxxo gaining 25 emotional damage at the end by Lammis jumping on him is a similarly amusing segment.
Through it all though, the show continues to rely on deus ex machina segments to save the day. There’s not really any tension here either as we know Boxxo will find something to help him out. Despite the teasing hints in episode 1 of Boxxo running out of coins and potentially being in a desperate situation, there’s no such thing as he happens to have bunches of points to let something new pop up and save the day.
Still, if you go into this and switch off, there’s definitely some fun to be had with this one and thankfully the charm hasn’t worn off with this one just yet!
