Rebel Ridge (2024) Ending Explained – Does Terry survive his encounter with The Shelby Spring’s corrupt officers?

Plot Summary

This Netflix action film follows a former marine, Terry Richmond, who visits the small town of Shelby Springs to post his cousin’s bail. However, he meets two corrupt local police officers who take the money away. To save his cousin, Terry is pushed against the wall, forcing him to take some extreme action. In his quest for justice, he meets court clerk Summer McBride, who helps him unravel the deep conspiracy within the local police and the court.

Who is Terry?

Terry is a former marine, still struggling to find his footing after honourably completing his service. His cousin, Mike, is arrested in Shelby Springs on misdemeanour and possession. As a good man, Terry heads to Shelby Springs to post bail for his cousin. A few years back, Mike had run into trouble and become a police witness. He snitched on a high-profile gang leader and Terry needs to post bail before Mike is transferred to a state prison.

Unfortunately, he runs into two corrupt police who make an illegal arrest and search. The two police officers find $36,000 and refuse to listen as Terry, the money is for his cousin’s bail and payment for a second-hand truck he wants to buy. He explains the cash is legit; he sold his car and his stakes in a Chinese restaurant. They take the money, citing suspicion of it being drug currency. They warn Terry from trying to get it back and drive away.

Terry heads to the county house and tries to explain his situation, but no one listens. One of the court clerks, Summer, pities him and tries to help. She explains that technically; the police followed the law, but she thinks something is off. The local police chief has been doing some fishing things, and she promises to look into it.

Does Terry post Mike’s bail?

Terry calls his old restaurant partner, Mr Liu, and asks for a loan. Unfortunately, Mr Liu asks him to be patient as they organise the money order. Terry has only until Thursday to find the $10,000 for the bail. In the meantime, Terry visits the police office and tries to file a report. However, the police chief, Sandy, threatens Terry with felony charges. Terry tries to reason with the police and asks for 10k while they keep the 26k. Sandy agrees that it is a reasonable deal and asks Terry to drop by on Monday morning and see his cousin.

Unfortunately, Sandy plays Terry and moves the prisoners a few minutes ahead of schedule. Still, Terry follows the prison bus and gets a chance to warn his cousin to stay low. He later calls Mr Liu and is surprised that the man can’t help him since the police raided his restaurant. Terry reaches out for help to Summer, but she is wary that she triggered powerful people while investigating. She is worried since she has an ongoing custody battle for her daughter and she might lose her daughter and job if she crosses the wrong people. Still. She tells Terry that she found more similar cases. The police have been keeping the suspects for 90 days in jail while continuously adjourning their cases.

With time running out, Terry makes a move to rob the local police and take the 10k needed to post Mike’s bail. He uses his military skills to confront and take over the local police station. He promises to surrender after handling his cousin’s situation. Sadly, by the time Terry makes bail, the local police are on him and they arrest him.

What happens after the arrest?

Given that Terry broke into their station and saw things he shouldn’t have seen in the storage room, Sandy finds a different solution. They take Terry to the hospital and let him know that his cousin was stabbed in prison. Sandy makes a deal to let Terry walk free if he leaves town. He pays for Terry’s new truck and asks him to pick it up by the end of the day.

Tragically, Mike passes away and Summer drives Terry out of town while a police cruiser follows him. Terry refuses to continue looking into the case and respectfully asks Summer to stop, too.

Does Terry return to Shelby Springs?

The police make a move to drug Summer, knowing she will lose her custody if she tests positive for drugs. Summer is an addict and has been doing her best to stay clean to get her daughter back. That night, Summer calls Terry for help and, after helping her, one of the local police officers spots Terry leaving town. This time, they make a move to try to kill him. Terry takes two bullets but manages to escape.

On the other hand, Summer is forced to give a urinal sample for testing and put on leave. An anonymous source from the police reaches out and warns her to leave town. When Terry calls, Summer meets with him at Mr Liu’s restaurant and they start looking into the corruption going on in Shelby Springs.

They sneak back into town and interrogate Elliot, Summer’s boss. He discreetly tells them to look into the civil police settlement that happened two years ago. They also talk to the local judge, who admits that Sandy and his boys were costing the town money by their reckless actions. However,  the committee threatened to fire Sandy unless he cleaned up his act. Now, Sandy cleaned up on paper to avoid the state police from taking over.

The committee looked away when Sandy and his men started their little sidekick to maintain the local system. Every time Sandy and his men made an illegal or forceful arrest, the judges looked away and dropped the charges on the suspects to a misdemeanour. This allowed the suspects to be held for 90 days at the town court, where there was no legal defendant to protest the arrest. After 90 days, the police cams are destroyed and the suspects lose any chance of getting a settlement since the footage is automatically deleted.

Do Terry and Summer get justice?

Terry realises that Mike’s footage is still on the courthouse’s hard drive since the retention period is not over. They rush to the courthouse and find the police in the middle of secretly burning it down after destroying the footage. Thankfully, they didn’t destroy the original SD cards so Terry and Summer take those. Summer asks Terry to wait for her as she rushes to take her urinal sample before it is tested. Unfortunately, the police find and kidnap her.

Terry is forced to switch his plans to save Summer. He makes a deal to meet the officers at Rebel Ridge the following morning to make an exchange. While the officers stand by, waiting for Terry at the ridge, he attacks the station.

Sandy calls his men back to the station for backup while Terry mistakenly confuses Officer Jessica as the anonymous Samaritan who warned Summer. He trusts her with the SD cards and a gun only to be betrayed. She pulls the gun on him and arrests him on the spot. The other officers arrive as she walks him out. They quickly start planning how to make it look like Summer set the courthouse on fire and overdosed.

They decide to kill Terry and make him Summer’s accomplice. However, one officer, Evan, refuses to go along with the plan. Turns out, he is the anonymous Samaritan. He ends up getting shot and Terry moves into action to save him and Summer. An intense gunfight starts while Terry tries to get to one of the cruisers and activate the dash cam and get access to Narcan for Summer.

After administering the Narcan and getting Evan into a cruiser, Terry drives off. The local police follow him, while shooting at the car’s tyre, slowing them down. However, at the last minute, Jessica makes the right choice and calls for backup to help Terry and Officer Evan. She rams Sandy’s car off the road and stays on him until the state police arrive. Just when they are about to give up, the state police arrive and offer Terry a safe escort to the nearest police station. After checking in Summer and Officer Evan for emergency treatment, Terry secures the dashcam hard drive while the state police round up the corrupt officers.
