Ragna Crimson – Season 1 Episode 19 Recap & Review

Reason To Fight

Episode 19 of Ragna Crimson Season 1 begins with Ragna walking out of some type of healing device. He, Slime, Chimera, and Crimson appear to be on a moon base of some kind. After some brief greetings, Crimson discusses Starlia’s death, the Lese battle, and his new plan with Ragna and the others.

Crimson says he wants to focus on building up a proper team centered around Ragna’s capabilities and that they won’t make their next move until the Globe Chamber is restored in three years. Ragna says they should defeat Ultimatia now. Crimson says they will defeat Ultimata but now isn’t the time. Crimson mentions the Argentum Corps and understands Ragna’s sorrow concerning Starlia.

Ragna tells Crimson that Starlia is alive despite Crimson thinking otherwise. He says he can still sense her presence and discusses why he believes Starlia survived Kamui’s attack. Although Crimson disagrees with Ragna, Ragna begs Crimson to shift his plans around. Crimson gives Ragna more reasons as to why they’ll inevitably lose against Ultimatia, Kamui, and the other dragons.

He says Ragna should wait for him to conjure a proper plan. Crimson delves into his goals in more detail, stating how he wants to conjure a silverine-armed dragon-slaying force that’ll complement Ragna’s current abilities. Additionally, Crimson would like to serve as this force’s commander while Ragna is their supplier.

Moreover, Crimson reminds Ragna that he made an oath to him to slay dragon-kind and not Starlia. Ragna believes he can persevere through any challenge that’ll come their way, but Crimson feels the only reason Ragna survived previous bouts is out of pure luck and coincidence. After thinking things through, Ragna figures out his true reason for fighting dragons.

Essentially, he wants to live happily with everyone he’s met and holds close to his chest. Ragna tells Crimson he no longer wants to work with him and demands someone escort him off the base. Golem stops Ragna and informs him if he returns to the Argentum Corps’s base, and informs them about Starlia, they’ll likely return to the Lese battleground and perish.

Despite Golem’s warning, Ragna’s not backing down. Ragna thanks Crimson but before he departs, he succumbs to a deadly toxin. Ragna remembers Crimson’s remarks about a poison he took when they met. Essentially, Crimson told him if he took this toxin, he couldn’t rebel against him.

Ragna falls. Crimson says he plans to use Ragna as a research subject now and hopes to instill his silverine battle arts power in another more controllable person. Crimson jokes about turning Ragna into a zombie servant. Suddenly, Ragna awakens and tells Crimson that the poison only made him feel slightly unconscious, to Crimson’s shock.

While Crimson’s confused, Ragna tells Crimson he feels terrible about breaking his oath to him. However, since Crimson’s set on murdering him, Ragna asks Crimson why his words aren’t moving him. Chimera tries attacking Ragna, but he swiftly stops her. Ragna continues interrogating Crimson, informing him about how his Future Self’s first encounter with him.

During this encounter, Future Ragna realized Crimson’s body lacked a heart after he murdered him. Ragna confronts Crimson up close, stating how the Argentum Corps’ words moved him because they were putting their lives on the line during the fight, unlike Crimson. Ragna tells Crimson that he should abandon the “waiting game” strategy because he feels it won’t assist him in defeating the dragons.

Crimson tells Ragna to leave. Ragna departs from the base and Crimson heads to one of his base’s rooms to rest. Ragna returns to the Argentum Corps’s base and stumbles upon Ike, Shin, Chris, and the others. Chris tells Ragna that they have a hunch Starlia’s alive and Ragna tells them that he feels she is alive too.

We cut to Kamui and Starlia in a room. Starlia asks Kamui how she’s still alive and Kamui explains why. Then, he grabs Starlia and shows her that Olto Zora left a poison mark on her body. Therefore, if she attempts to leave the capital or if Ragna and her allies get near her, then the poison will activate and kill her.

Kamui prattles on about Zora and the wounds Ragna inflicted on him during their fight. He says he’s prolonging Starlia’s life because he wants to fight Ragna at his best. Starlia reminds Kamui about what he said about her dying if Ragna comes near her. Kamui tells Starlia to make a sword for Ragna that can withstand his claws.

We shift to Ultimatia praying to her deity. She vows to destroy their enemies and restore their powers. Additionally, she hopes God will speak with her again. Then, a being named Elder enters the area, asking Ultimatia what she and God were discussing. Then, Elder and Ultimatia discuss the Argentum Forces and Ragna and the likelihood of their arrival and Zora’s well-being.

We shift to Zora, who is still shaken by Taratectora’s demise. Suddenly, Elder interrogates Nebulim and asks him why he’s not responding to his telepathic messages regarding the sun’s vanishing debacle. Nebulim confirms he’s responsible for the sun’s actions because he wants to see if he can create a space that remains in the night.

Elder praises Nebulim and says he’s willing to let Nebulim continue his project and leave Ultimatia in his care. We shift to Kamui, who is reflecting on his murderous past life. He hopes by killing Ragna, he’ll attain power that surpasses that of God. We shift to Starlia in Kamui’s room. She says she’s not afraid to die but promises to forge a sword that’ll overcome Kamui’s claws.

Elsewhere, Ike asks Fu for an update regarding the teleportation circle’s progress. Fu says it’ll take him some time, so Ike visits Carula and asks if she can provide them with magic support. Carula says she’s willing to lend them a hand but wants the magic absorption circle’s formula and a sample of Ragna, Fu, and Majorca’s blood.

Carula’s skeptical about Ike and his forces’ course of action and says she will stop them if she feels they have no chance of victory. Ragna tells Carula they will be victorious and vows to murder Ultimatia to secure said victory. Meanwhile, Snake enters Crimson’s room to check on him. Crimson’s still shaken up by Ragna’s remarks.

Snake informs Crimson about Borgius and his ploy to sacrifice his life. If Borgius pulls this off, then Snake and Crimson will be the final members of the old Winged Bloodline. Crimson pulls up a virtual map and wonders if Ultimatia’s still incapable of controlling time. Realizing the situation might be in their favor, Crimson tells everyone to prepare for battle.

The episode closes with Crimson plotting to use Ragna and the Corps as bait to defeat Ultimatia.

The Episode Review

Despite some shaky plot developments, this was a decent showcase from Ragna Crimson. It shows audiences that the superior dragons are a lot more complex than one would realize. Additionally, many viewers will be happy knowing Starlia survived her bout with Kamui. Unfortunately, it came at the cost of her having a time limit on her life.

Hopefully, Ragna and the others can find a way to save Starlia before it’s too late. Additionally, the series is steadily building up to a large climatic battle between Ragna, Crimson, and the dragon’s group. From Kamui’s battle-hungry obsession to Crimson’s scheming, we’ll likely need to wait for another season to see how this all unfolds.

In addition to the storytelling, the animation and visuals were somewhat jarring in places. Some characters appeared stiff and jagged at times, making matters feel strange to observe. Moreover, the constant perspective shifts made important matters difficult to take in occasionally. The showrunners should’ve structured things properly to help folks fully immerse themselves in everyone’s affairs.

By and large, this was a fine episode of Ragna Crimson. It appears we’re in for an interesting war in the coming weeks and I’m looking forward to seeing how that unfolds.
