Episode 4
Episode 4 of Public Disorder begins with a flashback to Nobili being called as a witness. He testifies against two cops who have assaulted a young detainee.
At present, Franco’s mother is on the news as she begs for justice and talks about guilt and parental duty. Nobili, Mazinga and Marta watch her interview and are lost in thought.
Mazinga helps Anna with Pietro’s pension by taking her to his son who works in the pension department. Giancarlo is hesitant but agrees to help. As the duo leaves, we learn that Anna was planning on divorcing Pietro. But now, she cannot leave him and blames the life of a policeman.
The Nobilis finally head to the police station as Emma agrees to report the rapist. Nobili secretly looks at the report after she leaves. The boy is a mutual friend and they both liked each other. But he forced himself when Emma wasn’t ready.
Meanwhile, Marta has a night shift and decides to let Stefano stay with Agata for the night. Agata and Stefano are overjoyed while Marta is cordial. Later, she finds Salvatore fidgeting as Lena is coming to visit.
They have been dating for 6 months and he has given her countless gifts, booked a fancy hotel and the flight for her. Marta is suspicious and Salvatore lashes out at her. She then runs into Nobili who tells her about Emma’s case. She is worried as he makes a fake online account to befriend the culprit.
Onto the latest mission – the units have to hold off the locals if a dumping site is reopened on their land that night. Nobili and Mazinga are polite and sympathetic to the locals’ protests.
Salvatore skips the mission to pick up Lena. She never shows up and he learns from a colleague that she never was on the flight. He is furious and asks his colleague to trace Lena’s number.
The next day, Mazinga accompanies Pietro to the station and watches as the latter is constantly on edge because of his disability. The DA wants him to visit Susa Valley and recount the incident but Pietro refuses. While leaving, the unit greets him cheerfully. Pietro redirects his anger at Mazinga as he tells him his life is over without the unit.
Back to the mission, the site is indeed approved and Mazinga gets ready for a violent riot. This time, when the unit chants ACAB, he shuts them down. Once they reach the site, he is hesitant to charge as the protestors beg them to save their land.
Mazinga not only refuses to join the baton charge but goes back to the van. Nobili is furious and calls him out for abandoning his unit. Mazinga simply claims he is tired of the job while Marta looks at him sadly.
Once they reach the precinct, Marta tries to check on Salvatore but he avoids her. He finds Mazinga packing up and tries to stop him. The sergeant declares he doesn’t want to end up like Pietro and leaves. There is more to life than just being a cop. Mazinga then tries to apologise to Giancarlo but he claims he is too late and Mazinga should have apologised to his wife.
Agata doesn’t feel like skating and Stefano tells her not to go. Marta looks troubled but doesn’t say anything. As for Emma, she is jumpy and on edge. She confesses that she loves her parents but it is hard for her to show it for the moment. Daniela cries and Nobili is upset.
Elsewhere, Mazinga tells Anna he has quit. She looks relieved and kisses him. We finally see the bodycam footage as Mazinga uses a lighter to burn the bodycam when he enters the woods. At present, we see that he has been hiding it in a pot.
At the end of Public Disorder Episode 4, Nobili is stalking the rapist online when Mazinga visits him. He gives him the bodycam and tells him to do what a cop should do. Nobili is surprised and Mazinga confides that he has let many people down but he is tired of it. He has taken a sick leave and will soon retire. Nobili simply nods and leaves.
The Episode Review
Public Disorder Episode 4 is even more surprising than the previous episode. And while we didn’t have any expectations of the show, now we cannot wait to see how it progresses. And it is all thanks to Mazinga and this new side of him.
To be fair, it is not even new as the writers have been laying the groundwork since the first episode. His loyalty was noticeable while his sympathetic approach to the mission in this chapter may have something to do with Anna’s constant berating of policework, Nobili dealing with Elena and Pietro’s situation.
Nobili’s revenge while the obvious route following his daughter’s case, also helps flesh out his character. While he starts out as a foil to Mazinga with his goody-two-shoes persona, it will soon come to clash if he decides to dish out some personal punishment on the rapist. Quite interesting as it seems Mazinga and Nobili have switched roles.
Apart from them, Marta seems to be a primary character as well. And while the actress and her resting sulking face make her character enigmatic, her storyline is quite limited. We had hoped after the abusive ex-reveal, this chapter would focus on the purpose of her character, but they haven’t so far.
It is a little worrying as with only 2 episodes left, the Netflix show will have to resolve Nobili’s revenge, the DA investigation, Salvatore’s snooping and Mazinga’s affair along with Marta’s storyline.
