PlayStation Plus Essential Games Coming to PS4/PS5 in February 2024

Sony has announced the latest line-up of PS Plus Essential titles which will be made available to subscribers on Tuesday, February 6

The games available in February are Foamstars, Rollerdrome, and Steelrising. These are on top of the PS Plus Extra and Premium games that were made available to subscribers in January, which included Resident Evil 2, Tiny Tina’s Wonderland, and Vampire: The Masquerade – Swansong.

We haven’t had the opportunity to play Foamstars but Rollerdrome is a decent enough skating game and Steelrising is a challenging action-RPG for anybody wanting to play a Soulslike title in a Steampunk setting.

Foamstars (PS5, PS4)

A Day 1 release for PS4 and PS5, this new multiplayer shooter will tickle the fancy of anybody who thinks the Olympic Games is long due a sporting event involving lots and lots of foam. As the game hasn’t had an official release yet, there are no reviews for this one, but by the looks of the trailer (see below), this game should offer hours of fun for those who enjoy the cartoony graphics and crazy, anarchic gameplay.

Official Description:

“Welcome to Bath Vegas, home of the Foamstars, the quirky and colourful cast of athletes taking part in Foamsmash. Only those few with enough charisma and skill will be crowned Foamstars.

Join the 4 vs. 4 party and create 3D battles with mountains of foam, as it builds and alters the terrain around you. Shaping the landscape will give your team the upper hand and keep your opponents on their toes!

With multiple PVP modes, a PVE mode, and a plethora of customisation options, there’s never a dull time in the city of Bath Vegas.

Get ready for foam-filled-fun content updates every season that will make this party even better.” (source)

Rollerdrome (PS5, PS4)

From Roll7, the people behind the brilliant OlliOlli World comes this intense action shooter title set in a futuristic world where the public is enthralled by a brutal blood sport known as Rollerdrome. Unsurprisingly, you take on the role of one of the competitors of this violent sport, doing what you can to please the masses by pulling off a few cool tricks while eliminating your enemies.

The game is exhilarating to play and fairly easy to get the hang of but be warned, the game does get harder as you progress through each of its stages.

Official Description:

“Rollerdrome is a single-player third-person action-shooter that seamlessly blends high-octane combat with fluid motion to create an action experience like no other. Dominate with style in cinematic, visceral combat where kills net you health and pulling off tricks and grinds provide you with ammunition.

The year is 2030. In a world where corporations rule and the lines between reality and performance are blurred, the public are kept distracted by the violence and excess of a brutal new blood sport – Rollerdrome. Will you have what it takes to become the Rollerdrome Champion and unravel the mysteries behind the Matterhorn corporation’s true intentions?” (source)

Steelrising (PS5)

This Soulslike title is set during the French Revolution of the 1700s but don’t expect it to be historically accurate. For one thing, robotic automatons are roaming the street, and not armies of men, which is something we didn’t get to hear about in our history lessons at school.

You take on the role of an automaton yourself – you have several to choose from – and your task is to confront King Louis XVI’s mechanical squadrons and make the streets of Paris safe again. For more on the game, check out our review

Official Description:

“Paris, 1789. The French Revolution has been suppressed with bloodshed by Louis XVI and his merciless mechanical army. Aegis, a mechanical masterpiece created by the engineer Vaucanson to be the queen’s bodyguard, must confront the king’s army alone to save history in this challenging action-RPG.” (source)
