The Conference
Episode 5 of Professor T season 3 begins with Jasper Tempest taking the stand to address a room full of people. He declares that one of the attendees has committed a murder within the last twenty hours, and by the end of his speech, everyone will know the murderer’s identity.
The episode then shifts to the past, showing Jasper discussing his keynote speech at the university with his mother, Ade. Ade informs Jasper that he no longer works at the university, so he may not be the one speaking. Ade continues that Wilfred, the university Dean, has already chosen Haiden as Tempest’s replacement.
Wilfred offers to convince the board to hire Jasper back, but only if Haiden leaves to start teaching at Oxford. Additionally, Wilfred states that Haiden will be delivering the keynote speech.
Tempest checks into the same hotel as Haiden and tells him that his speech is dull and might endanger his new job. Tempest offers to help, but Haiden declines. That night, Tempest joins Tina and her husband, Alex, for dinner. When they are alone, Tina confesses that she had a huge crush on Tempest when he was her professor.
Things turn interesting when Haiden’s wife, Gisele, discovers her husband lying lifeless with a wound at the back of his neck in his room. Lisa and Winters join the case and begin interviewing the hotel guests, most of whom are criminologists attending a conference. They interview a prostitute, Vinette Lawson, who spent the night with Haiden.
She initially denies involvement in his death but later admits that she returned to Haiden’s room, but he didn’t answer the door. Lisa and Winters also interview Alex and Tina, who were having dinner with Tempest at the time of Haiden’s death. Gisele is also interviewed shortly after.
With Haiden no longer a suspect, Tempest offers to deliver Haiden’s speech as a ruse to uncover the real killer. He convinces Gisele to go along with the plan despite her initial reluctance, knowing that no one can outmanoeuvre Tempest.
At present, there are two suspects, Gisele Haiden and Vinette Lawson, both with the means, motive, and opportunity to commit the crime. Tempest identifies the killer but chooses to reveal the identity only during the keynote speech. He asks Lisa to ensure that all current suspects attend the speech. This leads us to the scene at the start, where Tempest has promised that by the end of the speech, the killer’s identity will be revealed.
Tempest explains that the killer, not being a genius, anticipated breaking under pressure and thus created a distraction. The killer altered Haiden’s watch and made a false call from his phone. At the end of the speech, the killer is revealed to be Alex Morley. Alex resented Tina missing out on an opportunity because of Haiden. He tried to sabotage Haiden’s new job by collecting evidence of his infidelity, and when that failed, he killed Haiden in a fit of rage.
As the episode comes to a close, Tempest receives the tragic news that his mother has tripped and been hospitalized. Ade has injured her hip, but doctors expect her to make a full recovery. However, Tempest is struggling to understand what his mother was searching for in the attic.
