A Little Drop of Poison
Episode 4 of Professor T season 3 begins with a woman entering a luxurious house. She undresses, jumps into the pool, and, after a few minutes, vomits and collapses on the floor, dead. The scene shifts, and we see Tempest visiting his friend and therapist, Dr. Helena, and briefly discussing Christina’s decision to leave the police force.
Helena informs Tempest that the police force is eager to have him back and needs his help with several open cases. Later, at the university, Tempest learns that he has been fired from his job on the faculty. As the episode unfolds, Lisa and Winter arrive at the scene, and the forensic team determines the death to be accidental. During the investigation, Lisa sees a woman in a red tracksuit who quickly disappears.
Later, in the office, Lisa spots the same woman, who introduces herself to Lisa as her new boss, DCI Maya Goswami. Pictures found on the deceased woman’s phone suggest a close relationship between the victim and Goswami. Upon assuming her new role, Maya reveals that there have been four suspicious deaths since morning, and she has a hunch that they are all connected. She suspects a serial killer may be at work, using toxins and poisons as their modus operandi.
After the briefing, Goswami tells Winters and Lisa that she won’t allow relationships between team members and asks one of them to request a transfer. Determined to prove their worth, Lisa seeks Tempest’s help to solve the case. Lisa and Winters investigate one of the victims, Hal Howard, and learn from a chocolate factory employee that Hal often argued with his brother, Edwyn, pushing for wage cuts.
Tempest also identifies a suspect, Fredy Walters, who is brought in for questioning. At the station, Goswami orders her team not to seek advice from Tempest. During interrogation, Fredy admits to selling drugs to the factory staff but denies killing Hal. Lisa also visits Dennis, Howard’s former business partner, who left the company due to rising costs and stress.
It is later discovered that all the victims had consumed Red Caps chocolate, the top-selling product of Howard’s chocolate, before their deaths. Eventually, Fredy breaks down and reveals that Dennis had provided him with ethylene glycol to add to the batch. Dennis has also kidnapped Fredy’s daughter and is threatening to kill her if Fredy talks.
When Lisa and Goswami go to arrest Dennis, he manages to escape. Tempest suggests checking a place that Dennis associates with success, leading them to track him to his holiday cottage. Dennis insists that he didn’t intend to kill anyone. Dennis attempts to flee again, but Goswami intervenes and subdues him.
Following the arrest, Lisa reveals that it was Tempest who had advised her to search for Dennis at the cottage, but Goswami makes it clear that Tempest will not be returning. Later, when Anthony Dixon’s wife dies after consuming the same chocolate, Tempest suspects foul play. Tempest believes Dixon may be responsible and is trying to blame the poisoned chocolates.
Tempest’s suspicion is confirmed when Dixon admits to giving his wife the poisonous chocolate. However, Dixon justifies his actions by explaining that his wife was suffering from motor neuron disease, and he was just trying to end her suffering.
The Episode Review
DCI Goswami has had a change of heart and decided to let Tempest stick around for a while. Despite some reservations, she recognizes Tempest as an asset who can help solve previously unsolvable cases rather than a liability.
This means you can expect to see more of Jasper Tempest in the precinct. Looking ahead, there’s a possibility that either Lisa or Winters will be filing for a transfer. DCI Goswami has made it clear that she will not tolerate both of them being on the same team if they’re dating each other.
