Truth and Justice
Episode 3 of Professor T season 3 opens with Jasper’s trial for the attempted murder of Simon Lanesborough. This trial is crucial, as it will determine whether Jasper remains in jail or is sent to prison for an extended period. Jasper surprises everyone by waiving his right to enter a plea.
Witnesses take the stand, describing Jasper as rude and arrogant, but they also attest that he would never harm anyone, let alone try to commit murder. Paul also testifies, highlighting Jasper’s invaluable contributions to their cases. He acknowledges that they would not have secured many convictions without Jasper’s insight. Paul also recounts an instance where Jasper’s intuition saved them from convicting an innocent man.
The episode shits to the past, and we see Jasper stumbling upon the body of a prison guard named Steddon. Soon, Lisa and Winters take charge of the investigation as they arrive at the scene. Lisa meets with Jasper to discuss the case. Jasper reveals that every prisoner locked up had a motive to kill Steddon.
Steddon was known for his corrupt practices, including mistreating inmates and smuggling drugs into the prison. Anyone who resisted Steddon’s influence became a target for his abuse. Winters quickly singles out Emil Rhodes as a suspect, citing overheard conversations about planning a murder. However, Lisa is sceptical, pointing out that Emil is due to be released in six weeks and wouldn’t risk his freedom.
Emil is brought in for interrogation and reveals that he used to be one of Steddon’s regular clients but quit. This caused a ripple effect among other young prisoners who also stopped buying from Steddon. This loss of revenue may have been a motive for someone to kill Steddon. Additionally, Emil’s name is on the workshop roster for the day, making it plausible that he had the opportunity to commit the murder.
Meanwhile, Jasper finds the murder weapon, a hammer, carefully hidden inside Omar’s bunk bed. Jasper alerts the guards, and Omar is placed in solitary confinement. Omar explains that Steddon was setting him up to have no job opportunities after his release from prison, and that’s why he killed him.
Jasper reveals that Omar is innocent and actually discovered Steddon’s body before him. He had kept this information to himself to protect his chances of parole. When Jasper confronts Omar, Omar attempts to confess to assaulting Steddon, but Jasper sees through the lies. Upon re-examining the crime scene, Jasper concludes that Mr. Burridge is the true culprit.
It is revealed that Burridge’s son died from drug addiction, with Steddon being the one who introduced him to drugs. Burridge blamed Steddon for his son’s death and couldn’t control his anger when he saw Steddon alone in the laundry room.
Burridge tries to persuade Jasper to keep quiet, but Jasper refuses. Tragically, Burridge takes his own life shortly afterward. This also triggers painful memories of Jasper’s childhood. Later, Omar is freed, and thanks to Jasper, he also gets a job and a place to stay.
The scene shifts to the present, with Christina taking the stand. She reveals that Jasper never aimed his shotgun at Simon. The prosecution attempts to argue that Jasper’s actions were driven by jealousy, as he and DCI Christina were once lovers. During a brief recess, Ade confronts Paul, saying that she knows that Jasper is taking the blame for Christina and makes it clear that she won’t allow it to continue.
When the trial resumes, Jasper decides to plead guilty to spare Christina further humiliation. However, before he can enter his plea, Christina amends her testimony, admitting that Jasper fired the gun at the ceiling, not at Simon. Witnessing this, Jasper changes his plea to not guilty.
The jury deliberates and ultimately delivers a verdict of not guilty, and Jasper is freed from all charges. As for Christina, she informs Jasper that she has resigned before the department had the opportunity to fire her.
The Episode Review
It’s finally happened! Jasper Tempest has been cleared of all charges, thanks to Christina’s confession. However, it’s unfortunate that Christina has submitted her resignation letter and will no longer be on the force. We kind of saw that coming, though.
She’s still under investigation, and if Sam finds her guilty, she could end up behind bars. But there’s a good chance Jasper won’t let that happen because, no matter how he tries to hide it, he’s still in love with Christina.
