Fallout, a new TV show streaming on Prime Video, is loosely adapted from the role-playing video games of the same name.
This futuristic drama series from Westworld creators Lisa Joy and Jonathan Nolan features a star-studded cast, including Ella Purnell as Lucy Walton, an idealistic vault dweller, Aaron Motten as Maximus, a young soldier with a tragic past, Kyle MacLachlan as Hank, Lucy’s father and the overseer of Vault 33, and Michael Emerson as Siggi Wilzig, a renegade scientist wanted by every faction.
One of the more mysterious characters in the show is The Ghoul (real name Cooper Howard), played by Walton Goggins. In this article, we take a look at one of Fallout’s most prominent characters.
Who is Cooper Howard? How did he become The Ghoul?
In the Fallout video games, the ‘ghouls’ are mutated survivors of the nuclear holocaust. These monstrous characters are nameless in the games but in Prime Video’s adaptation, one of them has a name: Cooper Howard.
According to the Fallout Wiki, Cooper worked as a television actor before the Great War of 2077. He was also a spokesman for Vault-Tec Vaults, the bunkers in which survivors took refuge. Outside of his career, Cooper was also a happy father and husband.
Life in the post-war world greatly changed Cooper, who eventually became known as the Ghoul. His strange appearance is a result of the radiation which transformed him into the grotesque and noseless bounty hunter we see in the show.
Unlike the ghouls from the Fallout games, Cooper has still been able to retain his humanity. By the time we catch up with him, he is over 200 years old, so he…erm…hasn’t aged too badly!
