Superstar Poppy delivers iconic vocals on her album Negative Spaces, which go well with the well-rounded plot lines. While she hurts, her music has the power to lift spirits. The themes are dark here, depressing even, but the musician knows how to provoke responses.
The album is full of punchy lines and triggering screams, and Poppy has the ability to use her voice as a statement – a pulsating voice which creates an explosive atmosphere. Negative Spaces meets expectations, delivering pinpoint accuracy, and shuddering points of view.
Poppy is such a talent, sounding far from the mainstream cannon. Her work has a sheen, but there is not too much polish, or commercialisation, like some music you hear on the airwaves. She has the ability to show her vulnerabilities without crumbling, which shows strength.
‘Have You Had Enough’ starts the record off with emphatic percussion. Poppy sings eagerly, and she rises to the occasion, crushing any chance of a breakdown. The lyrics are astute and diverse, letting us know that she is a poetic wonder.
‘Yesterday’ shows a calmness. Poppy sings elegantly until an electronic vibe comes through. Her voice is serene here, and the song departs from the screaming tension. Poppy becomes immersed in rage as she screams diligently. The chorus pushes the song forward, and that guitar breakdown increases the likability. At moments, she loses her mind.
Poppy is a superstar because her music speaks to the people. Negative Spaces has loud moments and quiet ones alike, making it an arresting listen.
