Peter Pan & Wendy (2023) Ending Explained – Does Wendy save the day?

Peter Pan and Wendy Plot Synopsis

The core plot is loosely the same as the original tale, taking inspiration from the original novel and the 1952 Disney animated classic, blending them together with new ideas for a modern audience. Wendy is no longer the caring, maternal figure but instead a boastful, obnoxious and whiny young woman, and we first meet her sword-fighting with her brothers in their bedroom. When a mirror is smashed thanks to their tomfoolery, Wendy blames John and then goes on to belittle her mother’s expectations for her life.

Soon, Peter Pan and Tinker Bell arrive and whisk Wendy and her brothers, John and Michael, up for a swashbuckling adventure in Neverland, where they’re joined by the warrior Tiger Lily and the Lost Boys. Together, they set out on a vast, swashbuckling adventure to try and defeat the evil Captain Hook.

What does Wendy do after she’s saved by Peter Pan?

Wendy leads the Lost Boys to save her brothers from execution with Tiger Lily. Peter Pan is in disguise as one of the pirates, leading a rather amusing chant that disrupts Hook’s flow and prompts Tick0Tock the crocodile to get involved. Only, he’s not actually Tick-Tock, he’s just a giant monstrous croc. Anyway, the pirates escape, as do Peter Pan and all the kids.

Now safe, Wendy punches Peter Pan in the face. She also lashes out at Tinker Bell and claims Peter Pan isn’t any help. Wendy believes Peter Pan is going to need help defeating Hook.

Over at the lost Boys hideout, Peter suggests Wendy read a bedtime story to them. She refuses, instead telling Peter Pan he needs to reveal more of his past. Wendy does eventually sing a lullaby to them though, and as the kids fall asleep, her song resonates across Neverland and Hook, alongside his pirates, who hear her voice on the wind.

Does Hook kill Peter Pan?

With all the Lost Boys asleep, Wendy takes potshots at Peter Pan again, claiming he never listens to anyone. She follows Tinker Bell upstairs where Peter Pan’s room sees the name James crossed out. Wendy speaks to Peter and he’s not happy that they’re fighting. It turns out Hook was the very first Lost Boy and Neverland wasn’t good enough for him. He sailed away one day and when he returned, he was evil. Wendy suggests he’s not outright evil but has just grown up wrong.

Hook breaks into the den and knocks Peter down. Peter seems to have been killed, so Hook snatches up the kids and takes them aboard his ship.

Tiger Lily sense something afoul and races off to find Peter Pan. Hook confronts Wendy, wanting to know the origin of the lullaby she was humming. Here, Hook admits that he was forced out of Neverland by Peter Pan because he missed his mother.

How does the final fight end?

Hook decides to execute all the kids but Wendy sacrifices herself to save the others, suggesting they could grow up to be pirates. Hook refuses but decides she should walk the plank first. While this is going on, Tiger Lily brings Peter Pan back to life and they race off on Tiger Lily’s horse toward Hook’s pirate ship.

Wendy jumps off the plank to head into the water but she thinks happy thoughts and manages to save herself from a sticky end. Meanwhile, Tinker Bell manages to elevate the lantern she’s stuck inside of and then smashes the glass, breaking out and spreading her magic around.

Wendy elevates up and proclaims “this magic belongs to no boy”. Wendy and Tinker Bell work together, elevating the pirate ship and tipping it onto its side. Peter Pan gets involved too and he squares off against Hook one on one. For a while anyway. Wendy drops the sail and then chaos breaks out completely, with Wendy inevitably fighting off numerous pirates herself while Tiger Lily does the same.

Wendy turns the ship upside down, which knocks all the pirates out but saves the Lost Boys who hold on for dear life. Peter Pan looks set to fall until Wendy saves him and he confronts Hook. Peter Pan apologizes to James for hurting him but as Hook looks set to hit Pan, Wendy stops him. A cannonball blast sees Hook holding on for dear life but unfortunately, with a lack of good thoughts, he can’t fly and he tumbles into the water below.

What happens to the Lost Boys?

As a result of all this, Wendy decides its time to send the Lost Boys home while Tiger Lily returns to Neverland on her own. The Lost Boys aren’t returned to their own families though, instead Wendy brings them all back to their home in London. When her parents walk in and see them, they’re shocked. Wendy and the others suggests that they adopt all the kids instead.

At the end of the original novel, it is not clear what happens to the Lost Boys so this is a nice, happy ending. However, it is hinted that the Lost Boys continue to live in Neverland and have new adventures with Peter too.

In one of the final scenes of the story, Peter tells Wendy that he will return to Neverland, and she responds by asking if he will take her daughter with him on his next visit. This implies that the Lost Boys are still living there, but of course not in this version, which is a much happier ending for them all. And more of a headache for the Darling parents, who have to try and explain where all these kids came from!

How does Peter Pan & Wendy end?

Up on the roof, Wendy speaks to Peter Pan, who actually used to live in this house. He kept coming back because he misses his mother and his family but unfortunately, they’re not here anymore.

Peter flies back to his pirate ship with Tinker Bell, with Wendy finally hearing Tinker Bell right at the end of the movie. The family look out the window and notice the pirate ship sailing away, so Wendy scratches her name just below Peter Pan’s on the brick.

Meanwhile, Smee and Hook are alive and cling to the wreckage. As they look up, Peter Pan arrives with Tinker Bell. Hook smiles, which seems to indicate that he’s ready for them to continue their adventures, and rivalry, once more.
