Episode 8

Episode 8 of Perfect Family starts with a flashback from when Soo-yeon was younger. When she was not adopted by anyone, Soo-yeon was sold off to a human trafficking racket and was about to be sold to a dealer. On the night that she is about to be sent to the Philippines, Soo-yeon manages to escape and flees from the traffickers. One of the men chases her but she pushes him off.

Present-day Soo-yeon states that killing someone was easy but she recalls how Hyun-min set Sun-hui’s room on fire. She states that at that moment, letting Sun-hui die did not seem as easy to her.

The episode moves back to the present day with Hyun-min aiming the gun at Soo-yeon and stating that it was she who stabbed Sung-woo. He also adds that Sung-woo shoots her with his gun and starts to shoot at her as we hear a gunshot.

Another flashback shows how Sun-hui was aware of Soo-yeon’s feelings for Kyeong-ho and decided to forego her feelings for him so that Soo-yeon could have a relationship with her instead. Sun-hui narrates how she was willing to go to any extent for Soo-yeon to forgive her.

Present-day Jin-hyeok and Eun-joo learn that Sun-hui or her body was not found inside the house. The cops learn that Sung-woo’s gun was used to fire a blank shot after its shell casing is found outside the Choi family house. Jin-hyeok calls Hyun-min and asks him to return to Sun-hui. Hyun-min asks Jin-hyeok to pay him as he had promised and states that he should make it quick before Sun-hui wakes up and finds the truth.

Sun-hui wakes up in the abandoned building and tries to flee but runs into Hyun-min. She asks for Soo-yeon’s whereabouts but Hyun-min refuses to answer her. Dong-ho attends Sung-woo’s funeral and breaks down for not having been able to save his teammate. Jin-hyeok asks Hyun-min to wait for some time while he collects cash.

Sun-hui starts asking Hyun-min if Soo-yeon is okay. He tells Sun-hui that Soo-yeon’s survival depends on Sun-hui. Hyun-min agrees to tell Sun-hui the truth about the death of Kyeong-ho and the disappearance of Sun-hui. Outside the funeral home, Dong-ho holds the lighter that Sung-woo had gifted him and thinks about their fond memories.

Just then, Eun-joo and Jin-hyeok show up there, asking to talk to Dong-ho. Jin-hyeok tells Dong-ho that the person who kidnapped Sun-hui is not Soo-yeon. He adds that Sun-hui is in grave danger. Dong-ho asks the lawyer to tell him the whole truth. At the same time, Hyun-min tells Sun-hui that he is her biological father and that Sun-hui was taken from him when she was a child.

Sun-hui reveals that she had guessed this. Hyun-min reveals that Jin-hyeok and Eun-joo killed their son and blamed the fire on him. After he was incarcerated, the couple adopted Sun-hui and held her hostage to keep Hyun-min from revealing the truth to the cops. Sun-hui refuses to believe Hyun-min. A flashback shows Hyun-min trying to get in touch with Sun-hui soon after his release from prison.

Hyun-min tells Sun-hui how shocked he was when he saw her living a normal life with Jin-hyeok as her father and Eun-joo as her mother. He narrates the incidents from the day of Kyeong-ho’s death and how he followed Sun-hui to Kyeong-ho’s house. Hyun-min reveals how he saw Soo-yeon fleeing from the house and Sun-hui leaving the house covered in blood.

Hyun-min tells Sun-hui that he followed after Eun-joo who entered Kyeong-ho’s house that night. He recalls trying to enter the house but states that he could not do so when Kyeong-ho’s parents arrived. Hyun-min tells Sun-hui that Eun-joo left after Kyeong-ho’s parents arrived and adds that she returned later that night and burned the house down.

Hyun-min continues to tell Sun-hui how he threatened to expose Jin-hyeok and Eun-joo but reveals that they blackmailed him into keeping the fact a secret for Sun-hui’s safety. After Jin-hyeok learned that Soo-yeon knew about Kyeong-ho and his parent’s deaths, he blackmailed Hyun-min into killing Soo-yeon. Hyun-min tells Sun-hui that he followed Jin-hyeok’s orders for the sake of Sun-hui’s safety.

At the same time, Jin-hyeok tells Dong-ho that Hyun-min has kidnapped Sun-hui. He adds that he was the man who served a 12-year sentence for killing their biological son. Jin-hyeok adds that Hyun-min blackmailed them for years and threatened to kill Sun-hui as well.

An epilogue shows Soo-yeon waiting outside the bar for her sister to leave from work. On the way home, the two share a drink and discuss their respective dreams. Soo-yeon’s sister tells her that she dreams of being very successful and is working hard towards that dream.

The next day, Soo-yeon runs into Sun-hui and learns how she was adopted by a rich family and was living a life of luxury. Soo-yeon dreams of having Sun-hui’s life as the episode comes to an end.

The Episode Review

Although this entire episode was dedicated to Hyun-min’s confession, no part of me believes him. All that he says makes sense but I cannot fathom the fact that Kyeong-ho’s parents came home late that night and did not find their son’s dead body in the living room. It is unlikely that they did not alert an ambulance or call the cops before Eun-joo returned to set their house on fire after putting Sun-hui to sleep.

On the flip side, Jin-hyeok rushing to Dong-ho now that Sun-hui practically knows the truth about him looks like another plot twist. We can expect to see that what Hyun-min is saying is indeed the truth and that Jin-hyeok did blackmail him after all. We will have to wait to find out what happened 12 years ago as well as on the night of Kyeong-ho’s death.
