Perfect Family – K-drama Episode 5 Recap & Review

Episode 5

Episode 5 of Perfect Family starts where we left off with Sun-hui getting a text from Soo-yeon. She rushes out of the school looking for her but is about to be hit by a black car. Hyun-woo follows after Sun-hui and saves her from getting hit by the car. Sun-hui narrates how the feeling of being pushed out of the way by Hyun-woo felt similar to drowning in the river as she wonders if she ever drowned as a child.

At the hospital, Hyun-woo tells Sun-hui how it was certain that the car driver was trying to kill her.  He asks her to file a report about the incident but Sun-hui remembers what happened with Kyeong-ho and refuses to report it. Just then, Eun-joo and Jin-hyeok arrive to check on Sun-hui. Sun-hui notices Jin-hyeok’s reaction to seeing Hyun-woo and gets alarmed. Hyun-woo too notices the reaction but keeps to himself.

That day, Sung-woo tells Dong-ho that Sun-hui was almost hit by a car according to CCTV footage from near the school. They decide to interrogate her about the accident the following day. That night, Jin-hyeok is in a pensive mood at work as he looks out of the window. His business partner, Mr Han notices this and asks him to stop working this hard because he is great at his job.

The next morning, the detectives show up at the Choi house and ask Sun-hui about the incident. Jin-hyeok states that he did not want to share more about the accident but when Dong-ho claims that Jin-hyeok had rented a black car on the day of the incident, Sun-hui is shocked. Jin-hyeok is flustered but keeps his poker face. He asks the cops to visit his law firm the following day to have an official conversation with him there.

The cops leave and Sung-woo wonders why the lawyer wanted to answer a simple question in his office. Dong-ho states that Jin-hyeok was a very reputable criminal lawyer and adds that it is not easy to figure him out. Just then, Jin-hyeok gets a call and he gets upset. He unlocks the upstairs bedroom and finds that the window is open.

At the same time, Sun-hui gets worried thinking about the events that transpired over the last few weeks. Jin-hyeok barges into Sun-hui’s room and starts looking for the photo frame that she took from the upstairs bedroom. Sun-hui gets upset and shocked to see the enraged sight of her father. She tries to stop him while Eun-joo watches by the door.

Sun-hui asks who the boy in the photo is and asks more questions about her parents’ involvement in what happened to Kyeong-ho and Soo-yeon. Sun-hui states that she is very scared of her parents and she breaks down. Jin-hyeok gets furious and tells Sun-hui that he is scared of her too but Eun-joo stops him from saying anything else. He warns Sun-hui about entering the room again and leaves.

Later that day, the cops visit Jin-hyeok’s law firm and look through the CCTV footage to find any information about the black car. They find the car in the footage and wonder who had been driving it. On the other hand, Sun-hui meets Hyun-min and tries to get some answers to her questions from him.

Hyun-min reveals that he is a cop who is not related to her. He adds that he has been suspicious of Jin-hyeok for a while but does not share any more information. That night, a fisherman finds what he believes is Soo-yeon’s head in the river. The cops also find her identity card and wallet in the river.

Meanwhile, Sun-hui returns home and tells Eun-joo that she is out meeting Hyun-woo. Eun-joo asks to talk to Sun-hui when Jin-hyeok shows up there. The two tell Sun-hui that they are sending her abroad so she can complete her studies away from the chaos. Eun-joo adds that both she and Jin-hyeok will follow her soon after. Jin-hyeok states that Sun-hui does not need to go to school anymore.

Eun-joo tries to console Sun-hui and reveals that the kid in the photo was her older brother who died in a fire before Sun-hui was adopted into their family. She blames herself for not being able to save her son and promises to save Sun-hui from everything bad in the future and asks her to trust her parents. Sun-hui asks what happened on the night that Kyeong-ho died. Eun-joo reveals that she found Kyeong-ho alive in the living room.

A flashback from the night shows Kyeong-ho asking Eun-joo to leave because his parents would come home and help him. Eun-joo tries to call the ambulance but Kyeong-ho stops her. She returns with Sun-hui’s textbook and phone when Kyeong-ho’s parents return home. Present-day Sun-hui is shocked when Eun-joo reveals that she had nothing to do with the fire that killed Kyeong-ho’s family.

That night, Sun-hui recalls her conversation with Hyun-min. Hyun-min reveals that Jin-hyeok used to be a prosecutor who was irrefutable until the death of his son. Hyun-min reveals that Jin-hyeok was involved in an arson and kidnapping case about 13 years ago but adds that the records of the case had been wiped off the internet.

He alleges that Jin-hyeok and Eun-joo’s son during a fire but also adds that Jin-hyeok is the prime suspect in the arson and kidnapping. Hyun-min tells Sun-hui that the case was pinned on an unrelated person years ago but adds that he still suspects Jin-hyeok. He states that Sun-hui is in a dangerous situation living with Jin-hyeok now and asks her to report the incidents to the cops.

He also asks Sun-hui to report the incidents as soon as possible because he wants to help her. Hyun-min reveals that he wants Jin-hyeok and Eun-joo to pay because they took away his child from him which leaves her shocked.

Present-day Sun-hui begins to think about the new change in Jin-hyeok’s behaviour and goes back to reanalyse his behaviour towards her over the years. She also thinks about the revelations made by Eun-joo and Hyun-min and starts contemplating.

That night, Jin-hyeok watches news reports of Soo-yeon’s belongings being found in the river with no sign of her dead body. At the same time, Sung-woo leaves to go home while Dong-ho stays back alone at the police station. In her house, Sun-hui starts looking up information about the fire but finds that all the articles have been deleted. Sun-hui is called to have dinner.

After dinner, she goes to her room as her parents watch TV. Sun-hui gets a call from Hyun-min and the two chat for a bit. She ends the call but ignores a call from Hyun-woo. Hyun-woo recalls how Sun-hui refused to report the fire that killed Kyeong-ho’s family as well as the car accident to the cops. He recalls a time when Kyeong-ho, Sun-hui and himself were discussing car accidents in crime dramas. The episode ends with Hyun-woo wondering if he can trust Sun-hui to be innocent.

The Episode Review

The show keeps getting interesting episode after episode and I am very confused after this one. We know that Sun-hui is adopted and it can be construed that Sun-hui is responsible for the death of her older brother. Most of the things happening in this episode seem out of place which makes me wonder if Sun-hui is losing her mind and hallucinating everything.

Since Jin-hyeok states that he is scared of Sun-hui and Eun-joo easily believes that Sun-hui could commit such a crime, one can be certain that the makers are trying to misdirect the viewers. Sun-hui is an unreliable narrator and there are many secrets in this case that are slowly being unveiled in this show. So far, it has been an engaging watch and I am sure that more plot twists are on the way.
