Perfect Family – K-drama Episode 2 Recap & Review

Episode 2

Episode 2 of Perfect Family starts with Soo-yeon reminding Sun-hui about the fire that ruined her life. Sun-hui is shocked to hear that she had caused the fire and states that she assumed Soo-yeon had already left to live with her new parents before the night of the fire. She apologises to Soo-yeon but the latter tells Sun-hui that she will be doing everything in her power to get back what she deserves.

That night, Sun-hui has trouble sleeping as she thinks about what her mistake had done to Soo-yeon. She takes her father’s advice and writes a letter to her which she leaves at her desk the following day. Soo-yeon finds the letter and reads it on the rooftop. She is touched by Sun-hui’s apology when the two female students show up there.

They try to get Soo-yeon to join them so they could together bully Sun-hui but Soo-yeon beats the girls up and asks them to stay away from Sun-hui. She goes back to class and thanks Sun-hui for the letter. Sun-hui is happy about this and gets back home. On her way home, Soo-yeon runs into two boys who beat her up. The boys are friends with the female classmates who want Soo-yeon to join them in bullying Sun-hui.

Together, the boys beat Soo-yeon up in the empty alleyway but Kyeong-ho shows up there and saves her. Kyeong-ho beats up the boys and threatens to expose the two girls who were in the same class as him. The four scurry while Kyeong-ho checks up on Soo-yeon. Hyun-woo tells Kyeong-ho that the cops are on their way.

Kyeong-ho grabs Soo-yeon’s arm and they flee before the cops can catch them. Kyeong-ho and Hyun-woo drop Soo-yeon home that night to make sure she is safe. Soo-yeon is touched by the incident. She spots Kyeong-ho and Sun-hui taking photos in class the following day and offers to take a photo of them with Hyun-woo. She later asks to take a photo with Kyeong-ho.

That night, Sun-hui invites Soo-yeon to have dinner at her house. Soo-yeon is shocked to see the luxurious life Sun-hui has as well as the caring parents that she is blessed with. She leaves to go home that night and seems visibly uncomfortable. The next day, Soo-yeon is emptying the class trashcan when she overhears Kyeong-ho and Hyun-woo talking.

Hyun-woo asks Kyeong-ho to drop the idea of proposing to Sun-hui and states that she is too busy with academics to date him. He presents the idea that Kyeong-ho should ask Soo-yeon out because she too had feelings for him. Kyeong-ho is weirded out by the idea and tells Hyun-woo that he does not care about Soo-yeon. He adds that he was going to ask Sun-hui out that day.

Soo-yeon gets upset and goes back to class. She yells at Sun-hui for being a bad friend to her and asks her to walk home with her that day after school. As school ends, Kyeong-ho asks Sun-hui to walk home with him but she refuses. She adds that she needs to go to the academy and leaves with Soo-yeon. Soo-yeon drops Sun-hui home that evening and goes to meet Kyeong-ho.

At the same time, Sun-hui notices that she has borrowed Soo-yeon’s workbook and goes out to return it to her. She finds Soo-yeon entering Kyeong-ho’s house and goes in when she hears loud noises from inside. The commotion ends with Soo-yeon stabbing Kyeong-ho with a knife and he dies in the living room of his house.

That night, Sun-hui goes back home and tells her mother – Eun-joo that she had killed Kyeong-ho. She adds that she left her phone and a workbook in Kyeong-ho’s house. Eun-joo asks if Sun-hui is sure that she killed Kyeong-ho and confirms if there were any other witnesses to the crime.

Sun-hui tells her mother that she wants to turn herself in for the crime but Eun-joo forces her to clean up. She makes Sun-hui a glass of milk and laces it with something to make her fall asleep.

The next morning, Sun-hui wakes up and is shocked to see her phone and workbook on her study table. She goes downstairs and finds Eun-joo and Jin-hyeok appear chatty as usual. Eun-joo sets up the table for the three to have breakfast as usual. Sun-hui finds their reaction odd after what had happened the night before but is suddenly drawn to the news broadcast.

The news report states that Kyeong-ho’s house had burned down in a fire which killed his entire family. At the same time, Detectives Dong-ho and Sung-woo investigate the scene. Sung-woo tells Dong-ho that cigarettes and paint thinner found in Kyeong-ho’s room caused the fire. He adds that paint thinner was not an unusual item found in the house because Kyeong-ho’s father was a painter by profession.

Just then, Dong-ho spots Soo-yeon in the crowd outside Kyeong-ho’s house. He notices her wearing the school uniform and asks Sung-woo to investigate Kyeong-ho’s friends. The episode ends with a flashback as Eun-joo and Jin-hyeok visit the orphanage and ask Sun-hui to go home with them.

The Episode Review

It has only been 2 episodes and this show is really eerie but intriguing. From Soo-yeon to Sun-hui’s family, everything about this drama screams psychological thriller. We know that Sun-hui is taking accountability for the murder of Kyeong-ho because she feels guilty about causing the fire that ruined Soo-yeon’s life.

It is also clear that Eun-joo did something to cause the fire but given Soo-yeon’s affinity for fire, she cannot be ruled out as a culprit. Moreover, Jin-hyeok and Eun-joo are awfully nonchalant about the fact that a house in their neighbourhood has caught on fire. This definitely raises a lot of suspicions towards them and given Jin-hyeok’s profession, he knows how to get away with this crime.
