Episode 10

Episode 10 of Perfect Family starts with a flashback from 12 years ago when Jin-hyeok was admitted to the hospital after being attacked by Hyun-min.

Eun-joo and her son – Sang-ho – are concerned for Jin-hyeok’s well-being. Jin-hyeok tries to make light of the situation. At the same time, Hyun-min goes to his mother’s house and brings Sun-hui with him to the same hospital to treat his allergy.

Jin-hyeok recognises Hyun-min owing to the fact that they have the same time. They chat and Jin-hyeok mentions that he tripped and fell after having a little too much to drink.

Hyun-min tells Jin-hyeok that he is at the hospital to treat his severe peanut allergy. Hyun-min tells Jin-hyeok how he was having a hard time selling insurance policies and how he was looking after his daughter and mother all by himself.

Hyun-min asks Jin-hyeok to look after Sun-hui while he goes in for a test. He goes to the convenience store and gets a bag full of snacks for Sun-hui, including a peanut snack bar.

When Jin-hyeok enters the doctor’s cabin for a test, Hyun-min leaves the snacks with Sang-ho and asks him to take care of Sun-hui. Sang-go gives the snack bar to Sun-hui, not knowing about her peanut allergy which causes Sun-hui to pass out.

Sun-hui is taken to the ICU while Sang-ho is rattled by the incident. Jin-hyeok offers to purchase insurance policies from Hyun-min for himself and his colleagues. Eun-joo offers Hyun-min counselling sessions and he flirts with her. Eun-joo does not make much of the interaction and invites him over for dinner with Sun-hui for Sang-ho to meet her.

Hyun-min starts using his connection with Jin-hyeok to his leverage and extort money from criminals. At dinner, Hyun-min throws a pity party for himself and Sun-hui which prompts Jin-hyeok to purchase another insurance policy from him under Eun-joo and Sang-ho’s names. Hyun-min gets on his knees and thanks Jin-hyeok for his kindness.

Jin-hyeok’s colleague tries to warn him about Hyun-min and asks him to stop being kind to the man. His colleague asked him to be a civil rights lawyer because he was too kind to be a prosecutor.

The loan sharks beat Hyun-min up for failing to pay them back. They learn that Hyun-min was trying to commit insurance fraud and threaten to kill him if he does not pay them back.

He gets back home injured and learns that his mother is sick. Hyun-min takes Sun-hui to go to the beach and decides to push her off the dock so that he can get the insurance money. However, he chickens out and is about to go back home. He gets a call from the loan sharks who have been tracking his moves and they ask him to finish the job.

However, Jin-hyeok, Eun-joo and Sang-ho show up there for a family picnic. Hyun-min keeps the phone one answer allowing the gangsters to listen to his conversation with Jin-hyeok.

Jin-hyeok invites Hyun-min and Sun-hui for a trip on their boat as they go fishing. Hyun-min takes Sun-hui to a corner of the cliff and is about to push her off when Jin-hyeok shows up there.

He takes Sun-hui away and asks Hyun-min if everything is okay. Jin-hyeok tells Hyun-min that Sang-ho was his hope for a better future as Sun-hui was his.

A few days go by and Jin-hyeok learns that the insurance policies that Hyun-min had sold to him and his colleagues were fraudulent. He apologises to his colleagues and goes to meet Hyun-min, to talk to him.

At Hyun-min’s makeshift office and talks to him about the fraudulent insurance policies. He asks Hyun-min to return the money to him and his colleagues immediately.

Jin-hyeok tells him that he is giving Hyun-min another chance to turn his life around and goes back home. He tells Eun-joo how they trusted the wrong man and invited him into their homes.

Jin-hyeok tells Eun-joo the story of how his brother died in a school bullying incident because he stayed silent and did not tell their mother. Jin-hyeok blames himself for causing his brother’s death and states that this incident prompted him to trust Hyun-min as if he were his brother.

The loan sharks beat up Hyun-min and give him one last chance to pay them back. He picks Sun-hui up from the hospital bed where his mother was admitted and takes her to Sang-ho’s school. He picks Sang-ho up and takes him to his office as the episode comes to an end.

The Episode Review

This episode makes it easy to understand that Hyun-min is an evil character and has been lying to Sun-hui about Jin-hyeok. This also explains why Jin-hyeok’s grandmother was so upset with Sun-hui. From what we see in the promo of the upcoming episode, we know that Hyun-min tries to set up the first and tried to kill Sang-ho and Sun-hui.

However, it seems that Sang-ho died in the process and saved Sun-hui. The show started off as a high school murder mystery but has not turned into a chaotic mess. I want to know what happened to Hyun-woo, Soo-yeon and the other younger characters that we still know bits and pieces about, including that of Inspector Dong-ho and his family.

I am not sure how the makers will be able to wrap up the story in the final two episodes that will release next week but I am looking forward to seeing the conclusion of this complicated thriller K-drama.
