Pale Waves take charge on Smitten, which is an album exploring deep memories and revelations. The band proudly expresses themselves, sincerely making their mark, and showing a subtle side, while the music commands attention from the indie faithful.
The band draws from experiences, feelings and drinking dirges, piecing together a story-driven masterclass. They also break enough boundaries, within their sound and vision, sending notes of sorrow through the atmosphere. At moments the listener may fall into the stack of songs, embracing the style and hopeful embrace.
‘Glasgow’ starts the album off in a joyful fashion. The city is described as a base for the visionaries and the hard-boiled. That pleasant chorus has a joyous sound, and the drama is viable. It is a great beginning for a forward-thinking record.
‘Gravity’ is a sure single. The vocals are angelic, with an empowering drumbeat adding contrast. Every step forward only increases the sincerity of this unique group of musicians, and this song conveys hope.
‘Perfume’ starts with a commanding riff and sonic euphoria. The themes explore a startling story about surrendering. The chorus bursts in, dramatically lifting the song to new heights.
‘Miss America’ has a catchy riff and the song glides upon soft vocals which feature throughout. The song is about discovery. lost hope, and broken fragments of memory.
Pale Waves show their courage on Smitten, though the band try to overlook the state of the world and their hurt.
