If you’re looking for a new true crime series to binge with a hint of the paranormal and unexplained attached, Out There: Crimes of the Paranormal may just be what you’re looking for.
Streaming on Hulu and Disney+, this 8 part series dives into different true crime cases with bizarre or shocking links to the paranormal world. From UFO abductions to ghost-marriage scams, there’s actually a pretty decent amount of content covered in the 40-50 minute episodes.
Each episode mixes in a variety of eyewitness accounts, expert interviews and hand-drawn animations to bring the whole thing to life. Some of the cases are pretty outlandish and others feel like a stretch to link over to the paranormal world, but for the most part, this should whet the appetite for those who enjoy shows like Unsolved Mysteries.
The episodes begin in largely the same way, with an overview of the cases before looking at the paranormal side of things. We then get a balanced perspective as we turn toward the true crime elements and facts within each case, and it’s here where the show is at its strongest.
In fact, there’s a nice balanced perspective to each case, with episode 1 for example showing all the evidence and how one death could have spiralled out of proportion… or could be a big cover-up. It’s very much left up to us, as the audience, to decide which side of the fence we sit on.
There’s also an introspective message here about the allure of the paranormal world and the power these mythos have over us. Ghosts of Chinatown for example, is arguably one of the strongest episodes in the show for that exact reason, as it looks at how grief and the relentless pursuit of hope can lead some into desperately hopeless situations.
On the other side of the spectrum, we get episodes like “Web of Lizard People” which is such a bizarre and outlandish idea that you’re almost compelled to jump in and check it out. Which is kinda the point!
The visual design works well for the most part and the balanced perspective to most of these cases prevents this from falling off the deep end into the realm of farce. For the most part, the series does a decent job and there’s certainly enough here to recommend for true crime enthusiasts.

Silly show. That child was attacked by a predatory animal. Likely a cat, dragged away and eaten.
Also, the UFO fellow, I think was blown up by dynamite. Nice to think he travelled to the stars, and maybe he did, one way or another.
