Episode 14
Episode 14 of Outlander Season 7 begins with a flashback to London 1775. Hal has gout and cannot go to America to fight the war. However, he is one of the strongest speakers advocating to destroy the American colonies to send a message to the rest. He wants John to go in his stead, and as he writes the commission, we see John’s middle name is Bertram Armstrong.
John stops Hal who is also interested in helping William who wants to join the war efforts. John convinces Hal to pursue peace and in exchange, promises not to join the American Revolution. Well, at present which is Pennsylvania 1778, John swears allegiance to the American army to avoid being hanged.
While the Continental Army decides to use John’s house as a venue for the generals’ dinner, Claire runs into General Gilbert du Motier, Marquis de Lafayette (who would turn the tide in Yorktown). He continues to be friendly at dinner and introduces her to his aide, Percival Beauchamp. No, he is not related to Claire, though.
Washington gifts the Frasers the (first version) of the American flag while General Lee grumbles as he wishes to replace him as commander-in-chief. After everyone turns in, Jamie confesses to Claire that he is worried for the 300 men in his battalion as he has only ever led 50 men who were mostly friends and family.
As for William, he is given dispatch duty but one of the officers insults him for looking like a dishevelled groom. This greatly upsets William who retorts that he is no groom. As he changes, Jane sneaks in with her kid sister, Fanny. William is busy swearing in Latin and she surprises him by replying in the same language.
She reveals that Harkness, the soldier from the brothel is after her. She asks for William’s protection and in return, gives back his uniform gorget with which he had paid for her.
In 1980, Brianna drives back to Lallybroch and spots two of Rob’s men waiting for her. Fiona and her husband, Ernie show up with the kids as Rob is waiting at their place. Brianna shoots the men with a shotgun and escapes in Ernie’s van. Running out of options, Brianna decides to take the kids to Roger.
In 1775, William is trying to find occupations for the girls. He gives Jane money to become a laundress but it leads to a tense revelation since she doesn’t know how to use money. She has been in a brothel since she was 10 and her upkeep was handled by the madame.
Nearby, Jamie is training his men while Claire checks on the patients. One of them is John who officially surrenders to Jamie to end the farce of being a Continental soldier.
Jamie is still angry with him and has half a mind to turn him over to Washington. But first, Claire needs to fix John’s eye socket which has been mended incorrectly. It includes literally moving his eyeball and Jamie helps.
That night, Jane tries to hook up with William. Once again, he puts up a fight as he doesn’t want her to do anything she doesn’t want to. She calls him a coward and he kisses her. However, that is all he does and wonders if she has fallen for him. She scoffs and leaves.
Meanwhile, Ian feels as if his father’s ghost is trying to warn him of his impending death. Rachel hopes to be by his side till the end and offers to help him put on his war paint.
The next day, Jane decides to leave and William is confused. Fanny convinces her to tell the truth – Harkness bought Fanny and Jane killed him for it. William promises to keep her secret but begs her not to leave.
But fate has other plans as William’s next mission is for Richardson once again. The captain claims William can finally gain his trust should he deliver an important letter to the Hessian captain, Oberst Von Schnell.
Well, it is a trap to take William hostage and coerce John and Hal into agreeing to the Continental Army’s demands. The first time was a trap as well which William unknowingly sabotaged when he got injured and met Ian.
The news comes from Percival who is not only a spy but also likes John and is his step-brother. John hates him but trusts his intel. He had rescued Percival from a British prison and helped him escape to France. Jamie cannot abandon his battalion but John can. Jamie makes him Ian’s ‘prisoner’ and they go after William.
On cue, William reaches the Hessians and after reading the message, Oberst asks him to stay for dinner at the end of Outlander Season 7 Episode 14.
The Episode Review
With the author, Diana Gabaldon herself writing Outlander Season 7 Episode 14, you just know it will end up becoming a character exploration of her favourite characters. We saw something similar with the Duke of Sandringham episode when Murtagh got his time to shine.
And this time, we see it again with Jamie and John’s dynamic, especially with the former’s dialogue of “go save our son;” that no matter their differences, William will always be the best thing to happen to them.
As for poor old William, it was quite strange why Richardson sent him on the goose chase, especially when the recipients turned out to be so suspicious. We really should have caught that foreshadowing of him being a turncoat. But at least, this time William has Jane, John, Ian and Jamie worrying for him and trying to rescue him.
