Episode 11
Episode 11 of Outlander Season 7 begins in 1778 with Lord John and Claire marrying with William as a witness. Claire is heartbroken as she takes off John’s ring once she is alone. Meanwhile, Rachel comforts Ian who makes up a grave for Jamie.
It cuts to 1739 and Roger tells Buck about his father. They finally find the tinker who got Jerry’s dog tag. Roger buys a gemstone from him and also pays him to know of Jerry’s location. Roger and Buck find three locals with Jerry’s pilot coat but they are hostile and shoo them away. Roger is worried that his dad is dead but Buck gives him hope. They also wonder if there is some connection between Jerry and Jem.
Next, in 1980, Bree and Mandy arrive back in Lallybroch. While Bree is alone, Rob suddenly shows up. Turns out, he simply pretended to time-travel to get Roger and Buck out of the way. However, Jem refuses to show Rob the Spaniard’s cave so Bree has to convince him. Fortunately, Rob drops his guard and Bree knocks him out.
Back in 1778, William respects Claire but she is a rebel. Instead, he is worried for Lord John’s reputation and wonders why he is going to such lengths for Jamie who was just a groomsman. John shares Jamie was a friend and he owes it to him. He doesn’t care for his reputation either and is just happy his son is with him.
Nearby, as Ian and Rachel head back, they joke about marriage. Ian decides to tell her about his first wife, Emily and his son. Rachel questions his love for her but he assures her that Emily is his past. At this, Rachel declares her love to Ian and they kiss.
Meanwhile, Claire continues to grieve Jamie as she gets drunk and even contemplates suicide. Similarly, John too gets drunk and hears her crying. He goes to her, not wanting to mourn alone. She lashes out at him and they end up sleeping together.
The morning after is awkward and they both confess they imagined Jamie. She knows Jamie offered to sleep with John and he refused. He explains that he wanted Jamie’s heart and that refusing was the right thing to do as it would ruin their friendship. Claire assures him Jamie has always seen him as a good friend.
She is also curious if he slept with anyone apart from his wife. He shares that he had an understanding with his Native American cook, Manoke after she died but they never spoke. Claire is surprised and he too surprises himself by revealing he has never spoken to anyone in bed except her.
Ian soon arrives and tells Claire that he is taking Rachel to see Denzell who is with the fighting Quakers. He wants to say goodbye should she go to her time. However, she doesn’t think the future is hers anymore. She wants to stay and fight for America’s freedom for Bree’s sake. Ian is glad as he feels he has lost two fathers and can’t lose her too.
Next, John and Claire visit Henry who has finally recovered. But he shocks them by sharing he wants to marry Mercy. John refuses to help him and Claire thinks he is racist. He elaborates that it is not about race but the fact that she is a rebel and that Henry will lose everything if they marry. Claire brings up loneliness but he would rather Henry and Mercy be lonely than be imprisoned and declares that he knows what it is to love the wrong person.
To ensure people don’t question their marriage, he also asks her to join him in hosting a benefit which she refuses. He begs her to understand that they only have each other and they need to survive. That is the only way they can hold on to Jamie.
The day of the benefit arrives but John is alone. Richardson arrives and apologises for doubting Claire. While John is greeting guests, Claire finally shows up and is seen wearing his ring. But she is in a daze the whole night. A girl tries to dance with William but he turns her down as his heart is with Rachel.
Richardson pulls Claire into a dance and reveals he is a rebel which is why he warned John of her arrest. They need to influence John’s brother and Henry’s father, Duke of Pardloe for the revolution’s sake. She refuses to lie to John but agrees to keep Richardson’s secret.
After the benefit, Claire goes back to her mourning. Jamie shows up suddenly and has a happy reunion with Claire. His ship left early which is why he was never on it when it went down. John tells him to leave before his son shows up but William overhears them and is shocked. Jamie confirms he is his son and an angry William gives him the cross Ian had given him. He is also upset with John for lying to him.
At the end of Outlander Season 7 Episode 11, soldiers show up and William tries to stop them. Jamie takes John “hostage” and runs off. Claire is in disbelief at the sudden wave of events and laughs.
The Episode Review
Outlander Season 7 Episode 11 is a whirlwind, to say the least. The Jem mystery finally has an update while Roger gets closer to finding his father. Speaking of fathers, we just realised he is Bree’s far-removed cousin via Dougal who is her granduncle and his great-great-something grandfather. Weirdly incestuous now that we think of it.
Well back to the episode, Ian and Rachel have made some headway too with her finally declaring her love. We do feel bad for William since he has lost Rachel and his father in the same episode. We do wish John and William are able to reconcile as their relationship is one of the best parts of the show.
John, though, it has been a while since he has been in the spotlight and the writers decided to give him the wildest episode ever. To say our jaw dropped when he and Claire hooked up would be an understatement.
The show also fills in some gaps about what’s going on in his personal life since his wife died and his outlook on love. Glad to know he is not a racist though it is surprising given he is an 18th-century white aristocrat man with slavery being present. We do wonder what his reunion with Jamie is going to be like now that he has been taken “hostage.”
