Growth

Episode 6 of Oshi No Ko Season 2 begins with the narrator explaining the opening events of Tokyo Blade. The stageplay based on Tokyo Blade occurs during this narration. We receive preview stills of the stageplay’s actors and actresses. Then, we see Taiki and Kana perform their respective roles in the stageplay. Both performers give it their all

Then, we see Aqua and the others perform their roles. Aqua performs exceptionally next to Taiki. Then, Act 1 of the Tokyo Blade stageplay ends. Act 2 follows afterward. Aqua informs the audience that Act 2 depicts the confrontation between Shinjuku and Shibuya’s factions. He says the former faction is unified under Blade. Then, we see Kamoshida and Melt perform their roles.

Melt argues that Kamoshida is a talented actor despite being a known womanizer. Then, we learn this performance took place sometime before the performance we saw earlier.  During this time, Raida chats with Masaya while Melt and Kamoshida take a break. Raida thanks Masaya for introducing him to Kamoshida.

The former respects Kamoshida’s ability to bring characters to life. As for Melt, Raida’s unsure why Masaya insisted he participate in Tokyo Blade’s stageplay. Masaya says he wanted Melt to perform in Tokyo Blade for personal reasons. He argues Melt’s acting skills could improve over time. Then, we return to the present timeline and see Melt and Komoshida performing the same act.

In the audience, Masaya says Melt isn’t the “actor” he was in Sweet Today. He also knows Melt’s biggest critic, Yoriko, is watching him now. Then, we enter several flashbacks depicting Melt’s past experiences of being the “popular” kid and things going well for him. As the play continues, Yoriko notes Melt’s not exuding the same aura his character has in the Tokyo Blade manga.

Kamoshida has issues with Melt’s acting, too. He argues he might need to downplay his performance to Melt’s level, which annoys him. Then, we receive more scenes with Melt. These scenes depict him observing his Sweet Today performance, running with Kana, and other things. Then, the audience starts commenting on Melt’s performance, finding it lackluster unlike Kamoshida’s.

Then, we enter another flashback. In it, Aqua tells Melt that he should put his all into one of his role’s finest moments. Aqua shares examples of the type of scene Melt should attempt to pull off to win the crowd over. Melt understands Aqua’s suggestions.

In the present, Melt uses Aqua’s suggestions to pull off a solid act. This is reminiscent of the character he’s portraying in the Tokyo Blade stage play. We enter several flashbacks involving Melt’s character. Melt observes Akane and the performances of the other and eventually reads the Tokyo Blade manga. He examines the character he’s portraying and realizes he’s not too different from him.

In the present, Melt gives it his all. We receive several scenes of Melt going through a mental transition With all his might, Melt performs exceptionally, leaving everyone, including Yoriko amazed. Melt heads backstage and Kamoshida praises him for his efforts. Aqua shares a few words with Melt and the episode closes with Melt telling Aqua he had fun.

The Episode Review

The Tokyo Blade stage play is underway, and boy, did it deliver the goods. From Kana to Melt, the characters exceptionally brought Abiko’s characters to life with their portrayals of her characters. Moreover, the visuals and soundtrack will leave audiences amazed. From rainbow-like color splashes to strange art styles, Dogo Koba Studios deserves kudos for making Aka Akasaka’s stageplay depiction feel realistic and grand.

That aside, this episode gave Melt the screentime he desperately needed. For the most part, Melt felt no different from any other supporting and background character you’d find in fictional media. Yet, this episode shows that Melt, like real-world humans, has internal layers worth peeling back and examining. Therefore, this episode gave fans a wonderful character study of Melt and gave him the push he needed to enter the third dimension.

Hopefully, this won’t be the last we see of Melt’s character. All in all, this was a great episode of Oshi No Ko. It gives supporting characters like Melt much-needed “growth,” will enlighten viewers of the joys of stageplays, and will leave people with significant lessons to apply to their lives. I’m excited to see what type of growth Aqua, Kana, Akane, and the others will receive during this showcase.
