Oshi No Ko Explained: What happened during the “Scandal” story arc?

Oshi No Ko Explained

Oshi No Ko is one of Shueisha’s Weekly Young Jump’s most popular series today. The manga began serialization in early 2020. Its source material and 2023 anime adaptation by Doga Kobo Studios impressed the anime community. With Oshi No Ko Season 2’s release vastly approaching, anime fans can’t wait to see what’s in store.

Aka Akasaka, the series’s author, and Mengo Yokoyari, its artist, carefully mix emotional storytelling, likable characters, and rich themes to create a bright and dark entertainment-centric universe. By offering readers a deeper look at the idol and acting industry, Oshi No Ko resonated with multiple audiences, including ourselves

That said, Oshi No Ko’s tale is thoughtful and tense. It’s brimming with enough shocking scenarios, interesting secrets, and verbal confrontations to engage anyone who loves hard-hitting dramas. On top of having a peculiar yet intriguing supernatural twist, this pop star-centric series has taken fans for a loop with its multiple turns.

Being the geeks that we are over here, we’ll be diving deep into the Oshi No Ko world, shedding light on the elements that make this story such a spectacle to anime and manga veterans and newcomers alike.

What is the “Scandal” story arc about? What can readers expect from this article?

As with any series, Oshi No Ko is broken into multiple story arcs, each containing minor and major events critical to the overarching tale. Where some arcs center around our protagonists, others focus on the secondary characters or antagonists (if any). Oshi No Ko consists of 11 story arcs (so far), with the “Toward the Stars and Dreams arc” being the final arc, according to murmurs online

The “Mainstay” story arc is Oshi No Ko’s eighth narrative arc. The anime hasn’t covered its content (as of this writing). However, the manga covered this arc in its eleventh volume, chapters 101-108 exactly. This arc follows Kana who gets caught up in a paparazzi dilemma involving Masanori Shima (a movie director). Additionally, Aqua pulls out all the stops to protect Kana, much to a select few folks’ shock.

Considering Season 2 is almost here and likely another one will follow in a year or so, it may be difficult for folks to catch up to the series. Fortunately, this explanatory piece will highlight its important takeaways, allowing manga enthusiasts and others to see what’s in store for future anime seasons.

Before we begin, it’s worth noting that this piece will contain spoilers for Oshi No Ko’s eighth story arc only! To reiterate, Doga Kobo Studios hasn’t covered the material of this story arc (as of this writing). We predict the “Mainstay” story arc’s content may appear in Oshi No Ko Season 3 or beyond (if those happen). Nevertheless, read at your own risk!

How does the “Scandal” story arc begin?

The arc begins where the previous arc left off with Masanori welcoming Kana to his home. During her stay, Kana learns about Masanori’s playboy habits and Masanori tells Kana that he’d like to help her create her “masterpiece.” Masanori attempts to woo Kana but Kana shoves him aside. Kana informs Masanori that she’s in a complicated relationship with someone (Aqua).

As she rambles on about her frustrations, Masanori notes that he likes this side of Kana. Although Masanori fails to fulfill his quirky fantasy with Kana, he asks Kana if she can star in one of his new movies. Kana departs and there’s no clear indication if she accepted Masanori’s request. Kana heads home and the reporter (Itano) from the previous arc snaps a photo of her.

What’s the significance behind MEM-cho’s discussion with Aqua? What happens between Kana and Itano?

After Ruby reflects on the industry’s relationship policies, MEM-cho and Kana notice a news report about a talented woman who is leaving her agency. Kana tells MEM-cho it makes sense for people to abandon a career if they’re not interested in it anymore. Kana departs and Aqua arrives seconds later. MEM-cho confronts Aqua about Kana.

She fears Kana’s thinking about leaving B-Komachi and wants Aqua to discuss things with her. Aqua refuses at first and MEM-cho understands that Aqua doesn’t want to emotionally damage Kana. At the same time, MEM-cho tells Aqua that Kana likely became an idol because Aqua convinced her to. Aqua understands and ponders it over.

Eventually, Itano meets Kana. Before then, Itano sent Miyako an email, containing a photo of Kana entering Masanori’s home. In the present, Itano attempts to get details about Kana and Masanori’s meeting. Kana runs away, ponders the consequences of her actions, and flees somewhere.

What’s flowing through Kana’s mind? Why does Aqua refuse to help Kana with her problem (at first)?

While Miyako and Aqua share their differing opinions on the Kana dilemma, Kana traverses her city’s streets, contemplating how people will perceive her if this Masanori-related news is publicly announced. Then, Kana visits an undisclosed location. There, Kana reflects on her idol career and argues she was never cut out for the craft.

Kana tells herself she needs Aqua’s help. Seconds later, Kana retracts her statement. Kana says she’s willing to tackle any mean comments her fans will send her way. She says she’ll survive in this industry regardless if her innocence gets shattered in the public’s eye. Aqua eavesdrops on Kana from afar and says he’ll leave Kana’s issues in the adults’ hands.

What critical insight does Miyako share with Ruby, MEM-cho, and Kana? What convinces Aqua and Ruby to get involved?

Kana returns to Strawberry Productions and feels terrible about her actions. Miyako gives Kana, MEM-cho, and Ruby a lecture about reporters regarding their lust for juicy scoops and how they operate. Despite Itano’s actions, Miyako tells Kana, Ruby, and MEM-cho that they’re not sought-after targets since certain idol stories don’t make publishers money.

She argues that B-Komachi hasn’t reached that star power yet. Therefore, Miyako says Itano wants to create a hit piece on Masanori, not Kana. After sharing critical evidence to support her claim, Miyako lists several steps to prevent a situation like this from happening again. Such steps include attending places with more than three people, making no enemies, and others.

Most importantly, Miyako says Ruby, Kana, and MEM-cho should not anger tabloid reporters or travel to places with people who aren’t tight-lipped. She says these reporters tend to write nasty articles about people who spite them. Kana apologizes for her actions and MEM-cho says she and the others forgive her. Then, we transition to Ruby and Aqua discussing Kana’s situation on a balcony.

Aqua reflects on MEM-cho’s words and asks Ruby if she wants to help Kana. Ruby says she does because Kana’s her friend. Aqua agrees and knows the tabloid’s final submission date is two days away. He plans to do something about this situation before then.

Why does Itano refuse to comply with Aqua’s demands? What story does Weekly Entertainment release to the world?

Aqua visits Itano at a bar. Itano wants Aqua to feed him information about Kana. Aqua avoids giving Itano intel by asking him if he can remove Kana’s name from his story. Itano refuses. He argues it’s Weekly Entertainment’s (the place he works for) main article. Also, Itano argues Kana is an adult celebrity whose scoop would help his business make a lot of money.

Nonetheless, Itano argues he’s not going to insert details about what happened between Masanori and Kana in the former’s home. He wants to leave that up to the reader’s interpretation. After that, Itano rambles in support of Weekly Entertainment’s protocols. Left with no choice, Aqua barters a juicier story to persuade Itano to throw away his Kana scoop.

Eventually, Weekly Entertainment released their new story. Kana and the others are baffled by the tale the company posted. The story reveals that Ai Hoshino had two children before she perished named Aqua and Ruby. Moreover, the publisher shows the world an image of Aqua and Ruby and claims they’re currently pursuing entertainment careers.

What happens to Aqua and B-Komachi after everyone learns the truth about the Hoshino sibling’s relation to Ai?

Firstly, after the news releases, many reporters, fans, and others share their opinions on the matter. While some are thrilled, others feel betrayed. Eventually, Ruby confronts Aqua about his decision. Aqua tells Ruby he has no other choice. Enraged, Ruby brings up Ai and says she’d be disappointed in Aqua. Aqua disagrees and feels his actions will benefit everyone.

Ruby understands Aqua’s arguments. However, Ruby isn’t contempt with Aqua’s decision and tells him she no longer views him as family. Ruby departs, leaving Aqua alone to ponder his decision. To ease audiences up on the idea, Ruby informs the public, via an interview, that she wants to perform at the dome to fulfill Ai’s dream.

Kana, who’s grateful for her scoop not getting published, reports that Ruby’s interview enticed fans and others to root for Ruby and Aqua. This helped the twins receive more work and higher notoriety. Simultaneously, Kana says she and MEM-cho became more popular and received more job opportunities. Kana wants to thank Aqua for helping her out.

What do Kana and Aqua discuss at Strawberry Productions? Do the two become friends again or something more?

Aqua visits Kana at Strawberry Productions. Kana sympathizes with Aqua about his mother’s death. She delves into detail about her experiences with people and how many folks abandoned her when she lost her value as an actress. Kana compares these folks’ actions to Aqua and feels Aqua’s avoiding her for similar reasons.

Aqua argues against that notion. He tells Kana he wants to protect her, which is why he feels the need to distance himself from Kana. Kana whacks Aqua with a tissue box and jokes about not being romantically attached to him. Kana tells Aqua there may come a day when she quits her idol career. She argues she’s more passionate about acting.

However, Kana promises to give it her all as an idol until that time comes. Therefore, Kana hopes Aqua will idolize her now and claims he’s like a precious friend to her. Kana suggests they act like friends again and Aqua accepts. Aqua tells Kana he broke up with Akane seconds later, making Kana regret her earlier remarks.

How does the “Scandal” story arc end?

Sometime after, Kana and Aqua go for a stroll. However, the two return to Strawberry Productions minutes later because people are starting to recognize Aqua more than usual. Kana and Aqua settle on a nickname for Aqua. Kana departs and repeatedly says Aqua’s nickname. MEM-cho confronts Aqua about Kana and Akane.

Aqua tells MEM-cho that he doesn’t want to indulge in any romantic relationships with anyone. He argues it’s more convenient for him to build a relationship with Kana this way. Aqua says he’ll use Kana to complete his agenda if he needs to. Later, Aqua visits Ichigo somewhere. Ichigo yells at Aqua for revealing the truth about his and Ruby’s relationship with Ai.

Aqua tells Ichigo he uncovered the truth about the main culprit behind Ai’s death. However, Aqua refuses to say who it is out of fear Ichigo will kill the culprit. Aqua tells Ichigo he created numerous plans to make the culprit suffer. Yet, none of them were great in his eyes. However, he developed a specific plan and needs Ichigo to help him track the culprit down.

Then, we cut away to Taishi looking at a document regarding Ai. He tells Ai that her kids are living wonderful lives. However, Taishi says it’s time for him to work on a film he promised someone he’d make. The “Scandal” story arc closes with Taishi pulling up a script on his computer that’s tentatively titled “15-Year Lie.”

Oshi No Ko is a brilliant manga with an equally entertaining anime adaptation. Coming off of the fandom he earned with Kaguya-sama: Love Is War’s finale, Aka Akasaka has much to prove with Oshi No Ko. This arc left many fans, Kana ones, in particular, stressed. Although Aqua helped Kana escape her tight predicament it came at the cost of throwing Ai under the bus.
