Only Murders in the Building – Season 4 Episode 6 Recap & Review

Blow-Up

Episode 6 of Only Murders In The Building Season 4 begins with an interview with the Brothers sisters. They talk about their childhood and their introduction to film directing. What follows is an episode that is structured like a documentary with hidden cameras pointed at the doc’s subjects – Charles, Oliver and Mabel.

Last week’s episode ended with a gunshot. In this week’s episode, we discover two people were shot by the same bullet – Glen Stubbins and Zach Galifianakis. Fortunately, both men are still alive. As panic ensues, we see a bullet hole in a nearby window.

Mabel, Charles and Oliver enter a cab and are filmed by Howard, under the instruction of the Brothers sisters. They return to their apartment and meet with Detective Williams. She tells them the bullet struck the metal in Glen’s head and rebounded into Zach.

Charles tells the Detective about Tawny’s footprint matching the one in the Dudenoff apartment. She doesn’t respond to this news as she is more interested in the (supposed) fact that Dudenoff is back in the city and cashing cheques at a nearby bodega. After revealing this to the podcasters, she has another piece of news: Jan is also in the city. Following these revelations, Det Williams hands Sazz’s ashes to Charles.

When the detective leaves, the trio discuss recent events. Charles wants to leave the city as he thinks the Brothers sisters want to kill them. Mabel, on the other hand, wants to continue their investigation.

They head back to the scene of the shooting where Mabel talks to Marshall. He tells her to look into the Brothers sisters first film – The Desecration of Alice. She does so and discovers it’s a pretentious black-and-white film that has a surprise appearance from Vince Fish.

The trio visit Vince’s apartment where he is spending time with Rudy. Vince’s eyepatch is on a different eye. When Charles enquires about this, Vince tells him his pink eye has “hopped.”

Mabel asks Vince about his appearance in the film. He reveals that Dudenoff was a film professor and that he was in the film as a favour to him and also the Brothers sisters, who were a favourite of Dudenoff’s, apparently.

A short while later, Oliver calls Loretta and tells her about his near-death experience at the photoshoot. He pours his heart out to her but is only met with an “ugh” from the supposedly disinterested actress. Oliver is disappointed by her response, unaware that she is unable to speak because of a scene she is shooting in which bandages are wrapped around her head.

The podcasters assemble and discuss Oliver’s phone call. Howard arrives with his dog Gravey, who knocks over Sazz’s remains. When looking through the remains, Mabel makes a startling discovery: they contain evidence of two shoulder blades, which means Sazz wasn’t the only dead person in the incinerator. So, who is the second murder victim? The group discuss the case and consider the involvement of the Brothers sisters and Dudenoff. Mabel sends an image of the second shoulder blade to Detective Williams.

The trio confront the Brothers sisters at their apartment. The twins confess they were in Dudenoff’s apartment and that they would kill for their mentor. But they don’t necessarily mean this literally.

Mabel receives a message from Williams about the second shoulder blade: It belonged to Dudenoff, who is now confirmed dead and not alive in the city, as Williams believed. The twins are saddened by the news. They tell the group that they only took the Only Murders movie to be close to Dudenoff, who hadn’t spoken to them in years.

Charles is distracted by a rifle case that he thinks might contain the murder weapon. But inside the case are electronics used for the hidden cameras that have been installed in various places by the sisters.

The directors remove all the hidden cameras from Charles’s apartment, bar one. This particular camera hadn’t been placed by them so it turns out somebody else has been watching the podcasters. After making this discovery, Charles receives a message from Sazz’s phone. It contains footage from the hidden camera. Oliver and Mabel get similar messages, with footage filmed from cameras placed in their apartments.

As the episode ends, each of the podcasters receives the same message, which reads “I’m watching you.” This panics the group and causes them to flee the Arconia in fear for their lives.

The Episode Review

Dudeonoff is dead! Therefore, he can’t be responsible for Sazz’s murder. And despite being suspects in the case, neither can the Brothers sisters. So, who did kill Sazz? We are no closer to learning the truth. As the season is now past the halfway mark, this is frustrating. We might learn more about the murder next week but we we suspect we’ll just get thrown another red herring that ultimately leads nowhere!

Episode 6 didn’t move the story forwards in a meaningful way but it was still an entertaining watch because of the change in narrative style. The documentary format was a nice touch. While it seemed meaningless at first, it actually fitted in well with the plot and the reveal of the mysterious hidden camera. This led to a decent cliffhanger that will surely give fans a reason to tune into next week’s episode.
