Adaptation
Episode 5 of Only Murders In The Building Season 4 begins with a writer sending his script to Bev at the movie studio. We then return to where Episode 4 left off with Bev pointing a gun at Charles, Oliver and Mabel in Sazz’s trampoline shed.
When Bev realizes who she is pointing her gun at in the dark shed, she puts it down. Mabel asks Bev if she killed Sazz. Bev says no but thinks somebody working on the Only Murders movie may have. She then lets the trio listen to a voicemail from Sazz in which Sazz suggests there might be a problem with the movie.
Later, Charles meets with Detective Williams and shows her his murder board. Oliver turns up with news about the photo he saw on Loretta’s social page. The man in the photo is Jack Jonk, a former Olympic swimmer. Could he have something to do with Sazz’s death?
The trio begin to look into possible suspects within the movie production team. Charles fakes a phone call and points the phone camera towards various people in the studio. He, Mabel and Oliver then meet Marshall, the film’s writer, who was introduced in the opening scene. Before they get to know him a little better, Bev arrives in the elevator and engages Mabel in a conversation about the upcoming movie.
Meanwhile, Charles and Oliver head upstairs with Marshall. Up there is Glen Stubbins (the stunt guy), who informs the group that he is now a part of the movie. When he leaves, the podcasting trio chat to Marshall who is excited about being interrogated about the murder. When asked where he was on the night Sazz died, he tells them he was doing stand-up.
The group’s attention turns to the murder board, which Marshall is impressed by. They talk about the murder and Charles gives his version of how the killer got away with the killing of Sazz. According to him, it took around 12 minutes for the murderer to kill Sazz and dispose of the body.
Marshall considers this theory and suggests that if it is true, the killer must have been incredibly fit to pull off his plan. Oliver tests out Charle’s timeline of events by re-enacting the killer’s possible movements while being timed. It takes him over 30 minutes, rather than 12.
Mabel looks through Charle’s photos and discovers an image of a shoeprint that matches one from the Dudenoff apartment. This suggests somebody at the movie studio may be responsible for the murder. At the subsequent photoshoot, Mabel spots the shoeprint on one of Eva Longoria’s ‘tacky mats.’ It belongs to Tawny Brother, one of the movie’s directors.
As the episode draws to a close, Charles concludes that two people may have been responsible for Sazz’s murder. Mabel’s attention turns to Tawny and her sister Trina. As she considers the possibility that they may be the killers, a gunshot rings out. Has somebody else been murdered?
The Episode Review
There were a few fun moments in this episode, including the sequence at the photo shoot where the podcasters shared screen space (and photo space) with the actors portraying them in the Only Murders movie. The scene with Oliver testing out Charles’s theory was also humourous.
Outside of the comedy, there was more for us to get our teeth into in the mystery department. Could the Sisters brothers have killed Sazz? We don’t know but we’re hoping the clue Mabel discovered is more than a red herring. We expect more twists and turns in the next episode so hopefully, we’ll be one step (shoeprint) closer to finding out the killer(s) identity and the motive behind the crime.
