Episode 7
Episode 7 of One Day begins with Emma hard at work, looking for nice words to make sense of the novel she’s trying to write. Emma also has a pen name, Emma T Wilde, but is having a hard time even penning the first draft. Ian tries to read what Emma has written, but she refuses, calling her work awful and undeserving of a reader. In response, Ian says to Emma that she’s the most awesome and talented person he has ever met.
We also get a glimpse of Dex’s current life, and we learn that he has a new girlfriend named Suki, who works as a TV presenter for BBC. Dex calls her right after her show, inviting her to a party. It’s part of the showbiz, Dex says, but his girlfriend turns him down, saying she needs to turn in early tomorrow.
As the episode goes on, we see Emma and Dex meeting each other. They plan to spend some time together, drink some booze, and savor a nice dinner. Dex buys Emma expensive drinks, but it seems like he is trying to show off his extravagant lifestyle.
Moreover, Dex even playfully disrespects Ian, Emma’s current boyfriend, calling him Mr. Ha Ha. During dinner, the pair discuss the paths their lives have taken. Emma mentions that her job is going smoothly, and she’s also working on her book. Dex shares that he’s enjoying life to the fullest and has been offered a column by a reputable magazine to review various restaurants in town.
Emma tries to tell Dex about Tilly, but he leaves the table in the middle of their conversation to hit on a beautiful server. Dex nervously invites Emma to his party, worried that she might get bored since she won’t know anyone there.
As the episode goes on, Dex finds himself in a heated argument with a server over an uncooked steak, demanding to see the menu and have the steak removed from the bill. This leaves Emma feeling like Dex has changed drastically. To make matters worse, Dex goes on to insult Emma, criticizing her for not completing anything she’s started in years without taking into account her current situation.
To add insult to injury, Dex also belittles Emma by suggesting that she’s “just a teacher” and asks whether she wants to teach students for the rest of her life. This pushes Emma to the edge, and she leaves the restaurant. Dex races after her, apologizing for his harsh words, but it appears that Emma has had enough of his shenanigans. “You’re not the person I used to know,” Emma says.
Dex also gets upset with Emma, saying she never listens to him and doesn’t take his ideas seriously. The episode ends with Dex and Emma going their separate ways, possibly marking the end of their friendship.
The Episode Review
Episode 7 was quite intense, with both Emma and Dex, whom we’ve grown fond of, getting into a heated argument. Dex’s dissatisfaction with his own life leads him to insult Emma, criticizing her goals, ambitions, and job.
This deeply angers Emma, who is taken aback by how low Dex can stoop. She also has some choice words for Dex, and it seems like their friendship may be over.
