Nothing Uncovered – K-Drama Episode 14 Recap & Review

Catching Gong Joon-ho

Nothing Uncovered Episode 14 begins with Woo-jae stressing over the video of the man stabbing Eun-sae. He calls Pan-ho and asks him why he killed Eun-sae. A flashback to a day before her death shows Eun-sae meeting Pan-ho. Turns out, she sent him the news of her pregnancy. She reveals she knows about Na-ri and wants to be with Woo-jae despite that.

At present, Pan-ho admits he had Secretary Gong kill Eun-sae. We learn that he also killed Ba-reun. Woo-jae then asks if Pan-ho had Gong kill Jung-won’s father as well. He curtly tells Woo-jae to meet him in person. Pan-ho then calls for Secretary Gong and we see that he did indeed order Jung-won’s father’s death. Pan-ho doesn’t want Woo-jae to find out and tells Gong to find a solution.

After the trip to Mueon, Secretary Gong arrives and tells Woo-jae that he and Jung-won are expected to meet with a Chairman Jang for the Mujin resort project. Woo-jae says they can’t because Jung-won isn’t feeling well.

After the couple leaves, Gong chats with Tae-heon but the latter behaves oddly. Turns out, he was the student from the flashback in the previous episode. He recognised Gong’s knife from the video Jung-won showed him. He asks Gong to meet him for dinner.

Elsewhere, Jung-won tells Woo-jae that she has to find the killer. Meanwhile, Tae-heon mulls over all his memories with Gong. He’s convinced Gong is a good man. Myung-soo tracks his phone and says it was located at Pan-ho’s office all day.

Assemblyman Mo meanwhile wonders if Pan-ho has the upper hand. When he learns that Tae-heon tracked Secretary Gong’s phone, he thinks he could find something on the richer man.

Woo-jae drops Jung-won home and then gets a call from his father. Meanwhile, Tae-heon reads about Jung-won’s father’s death on January 10th 2010. Turns out, Tae-heon went for a meal with Secretary Gong that day. The younger Tae-heon had just gotten into police university back then and the older detective was treating him. At present, Secretary Gong cancels his dinner plans with Tae-heon.

Woo-jae reaches his father’s place and begs him to confirm that he didn’t order Seo Sang-gyeon’s death. Pan-ho says that Sang-gyeon followed Woo-jae in his car that night thinking it was Pan-ho. He filmed the hit-and-run and blackmailed Pan-ho, so he ordered his death. Woo-jae is distraught and says he should have never married Jung-won. Pan-ho warns him to not tell Jung-won the truth.

Myung-soo and Tae-heon have a drink and discuss the possibility of Gong Joon-ho being the culprit. Tae-heon is definitely feeling the brunt of being betrayed by the man he admired. At the news station the next day, Jung-won packs up Ba-reun’s things. The team and Jung-won, both, are keen to find his killer.

Tae-heon receives the autopsy report for Lee Na-ri and puts it together with Woo-jae’s story about the car accident. He and Myung-soo conclude that Pan-ho would have ordered Gong Joon-ho to bury Na-ri. Tae-heon knows that Gong needed money due to his sister having a rare disease.

Tae-heon visits the sister at a hospital although he pretends it’s a coincidence. She says she was diagnosed in 2009 and Gong Joon-ho was in debt. She was about to kill herself when Gong said he found a sponsor — a chairman of a construction company.

Tae-heon gives Myung-soo the update. That’s when Jung-won arrives at the police station for more information but Tae-heon doesn’t tell her what he knows. All of a sudden, Tae-heon tells her to leave Woo-jae and his family. He promises to get her out of that place.

As Jung-won had requested, Myung-soo sends her pictures of Ba-reun’s notebook. She finds something about her father in there. She then meets her boss, In-han, who had previously known her father. She asks if he knows whether her father was investigating Bongto factory. In-han says Sang-gyeon was looking into Mujin construction.

He also reveals that the Bongto fire helped Mujin company grow immensely. Jung-won wonders if either Pan-ho or Assemblyman Mo could have gotten Sang-gyeon killed since they both were involved in the project.

She goes home and looks through her father’s things. She finds a notebook with the words Mueon Cartel in it and assumes they refer to Pan-ho and Mo Hyung-taek. Just then, Pan-ho calls Jung-won to meet him.

A flashback to three years ago shows Woo-jae helping Jung-won with the case against a director of Mujin company. That’s when he mentioned that his father doesn’t keep documents on his computer but rather stores everything on paper.

At present, Pan-ho tells Jung-won that he will keep pressuring her with articles and other threats till she moves back in with Woo-jae. Woo-jae arrives and protests but Jung-won agrees to move back in. She says she’ll come the next day, surprising everybody. Of course, this is a strategic move for her to find evidence against Pan-ho.

As they leave, Jung-won tells Woo-jae that she’d rather be in this house since the other one has memories of her abduction. Woo-jae says he’s put that house on sale anyway. Myung-soo and Tae-heon are meanwhile following Gong Joon-ho. Tae-heon says they need to find his knife.

Sometime later, In-han introduces Jung-won to another reporter who was working on the corruption in Mujin. She tells Jung-won about a truck accident that blocked a road and stopped firetrucks from reaching the burning factory. The only evidence was a burner phone that the truck driver had spoken to. The reporter agrees to connect Jung-won with the truck driver, who is currently in prison.

Tae-heon sees Jung-won bring her things into Pan-ho’s house. Jung-won is welcomed by Gong Joon-ho. The reporter then calls Jung-won and tells her the truck driver committed suicide in prison ten years ago. Outside the house, Tae-heon watches Gong leave and follows him.

A staff member at the house tells Jung-won that a locked room next to Pan-ho’s study is off-limits. On the pretext of taking flowers to the chairman’s study, Jung-won goes upstairs and sees the locked door. She then looks through the study and finds locked drawers. But Pan-ho arrives and tells her he knows why she’s here.

He warns her against any funny business. Later, the reporter from earlier calls Jung-won and says she’s found information on the truck driver’s mother. The woman wants to meet and Jung-won agrees.

Tae-heon is watching Gong when Myung-soo calls. He says that a man has come to the police station and confessed to Lee Ba-reun’s murder. Tae-heon then decides to confront Gong directly, accusing him of all the murders. He begs Gong to turn himself in but he refuses. When Tae-heon tries to search him for the knife, they begin to fight. Tae-heon does find the knife but the fight continues and Tae-heon ends up getting stabbed at the end of Nothing Uncovered Episode 14.

The Episode Review

Nothing Uncovered Episode 14 has both, Jung-won and Tae-heon running around to find the main killer. But since we already know that Secretary Gong is the culprit, the investigation doesn’t come across as very interesting. We already know the what and the show should have focused on the how. Unfortunately, it doesn’t and we have to watch the main characters put the dots together for something that we already know.

The one redeeming part of this episode is that Jung-won seems to somewhat get back to investigating and seems less like a pawn in the whole game. Pan-ho does come across as a formidable villain as well, considering the confidence with which he has let Jung-won in his home even though he knows her intentions. Despite a quick pace and a moving investigation, this episode drags on a story that would have been more impactful with a shorter run time.
