Acoustic ballads come to the fore on this release by Nothing Nowhere. The impact of lost love drills through the core of the album, a stab at lost innocence. The musician tries to filter out the pessimism, but it overwhelms, pushing everything into a negative space. Though this is apparent, there are moments to like, with music that transports and cuts deep.
Optimism shatters into pieces on Hell Or High Water, despair flutters in with a vengeance, and the lyrics describe a battered past, with confrontations at dive bars, unhappy dreams, and the state of disorder. The backbeat is arresting, as is the acoustic balance. All the sounds creep up, rising through the atmosphere.
9 songs make up this record. ‘Honey’ is a solid portrayal of broken luck and pulverised redemption, with those acoustic sounds a bed for the echoes and the vocals. The track breaks conventions, securing a diverse output.
‘Shiver ‘drives the acoustic sounds in completely, and the chorus alerts the senses while offering a bleak story. The record isn’t for the purist or the chaser who craves a good time and roses, but it resonates well.
‘New England’ offers acoustic sounds and bittersweet lyrics, placing realism into the story. The chorus bursts into contention, and the track lifts up, becoming melodically warming.
Nothing Nowhere does well to craft an album of sad songs for the disenchanted people who crave a glint. It isn’t for everyone, but not all art has that connection.
