Max (formerly known as HBO Max) is jam-packed with great titles this month, with blockbuster movies, exciting new shows, and fascinating documentaries making their debut on the streaming service.
Check out the highlights below and then keep scrolling to take a look at some of the other titles landing on Max this September.
Please note: This list is correct at the time of writing but the Max schedule may be subject to change.
September 1
Anne Rice’s Interview with the Vampire – Season 1 (AMC+)
Max is hosting a number of AMC shows on its platform this month, including all 7 seasons of Fear The Walking Dead and the first season of Dark Winds, as can be seen below.
Also streaming is the first season of this Anne Rice adaptation that stars Sam Reid and Jacob Anderson as the romantically entangled vampires. This scored fairly highly with critics and audiences for its impressive performances and excellent writing so is one to sink your teeth into if you missed the series when it originally aired.
Dark Winds – Season 1 (AMC+)
Dark Winds is another big AMC hit that is worth a look if you are a fan of crime dramas. The series follows Joe Leaphorn (Zahn McClarnon) and Jim Chee (Kiowa Gordon), two Navajo police officers in the 1970s southwest who are forced to challenge their own spiritual beliefs when they get involved in a double murder case.

Doctor Sleep (2019)
Doctor Sleep is both a sequel to Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining and a (mostly) faithful adaptation of Stephen King’s sequel novel that was more satisfying to the author than the previous movie that deviated from his work.
In this one, we are introduced to a grownup Danny (Ewan McGregor) who has now come to terms with his psychic abilities. As the movie progresses, he meets a young girl who shares similar powers to him and becomes her protector when she is threatened by a sinister group known as the ‘True Knot.’
Mike Flanagan, who is no stranger to Stephen King after directing Gerald’s Game, impressed audiences with this scary and strongly-written sequel. It’s arguably not as good as Kubrick’s movie but thanks to the powerful performances of the main cast, most notably Rebecca Ferguson as the sinister Rose the Hat, it’s still a gripping watch for horror fans.
IT/ IT Chapter 2 (2017/2019)
Halloween has come early for Max subscribers as there are a lot of horror-themed movies and TV shows landing on the streaming platform this month. The aforementioned Stephen King adaptation is one such movie and there is plenty of other content for horror fans, including the main movies within the Friday the 13th franchise.
The IT movies are arguably the best of Max’s horror offerings in September. Director Andy Muschietti (The Flash) wisely split Stephen King’s epic novel into two, with the first movie focussing on the teenage Losers Club and their battles against shape-shifting monster Pennywise, and the second movie centering on their adult selves when they reunite to take on the malevolent evil that has returned to Derry.
The movies work as both chilling horror tales and stories about friendship with a tenderness that is often missing within other entries in the horror genre.
September 2
The Venture Bros.: Radiant Is the Blood of the Baboon Heart (2023)
This feature-length animation serves as the finale to Adult Swim’s The Venture Bros series. A starry cast, including Clancy Brown, Patrick Warburton, and J.K. Simmons, bring to life this concluding story that picks up after the events of Season 7 which originally aired back in 2018.
Here’s the synopsis:
“A nationwide manhunt for Hank Venture leads to untold dangers and unexpected revelations while an imposing evil from the past reemerges to wreak havoc on the Ventures, The Guild, and even the Monarch marriage.”
September 5
See It Loud: The History of Black Television (CNN)
This five-episode docuseries explores the impact of Black television on popular culture while celebrating the achievements of Black actors and TV show creators. The series, which has been executive-produced by LeBron James and Maverick Carter, features interviews with Judge Greg Mathis, Sonequa Martin-Green, Tatyana Ali, Kevin Frazier, and many others.
The official synopsis reads:
“Today we are in the midst of what is being widely referred to as “The Golden Age of Black Television;” however, this “Golden Age” is the culmination of an eighty-year struggle for Black artists to find a voice and fight for representation, beginning in the 1950s with Amos n’ Andy, which was the first series to feature Black characters.
See It Loud explores the vast history of Black television through iconic performances across various genres including sitcoms, comedy, drama, unscripted, variety, and science fiction.”
September 7
Devil’s Road: The True Story of Ed and Lorraine Warren (Travel Channel)
Fictionalized in The Conjuring movies, Ed and Lorraine Warren were real-life ghost hunters who battled demons and poltergeists for over 50 years. Interviews and archival footage charts the paranormal power couple’s rise to fame and give an insight into the duo’s most famous cases.
September 13
Donyale Luna: Supermodel (HBO Original)
Donyale Luna was one of the first Black models to appear on the cover of such publications as Vogue and Harper’s Bazaar. This documentary explores the life and career of this pioneering supermodel with archive footage and interviews with family and friends who detail the obstacles she had to overcome to achieve worldwide fame.
September 21
Young Love – Season 1
The highs and lows of young love are explored in this new animated series that will be relatable to anybody who had to navigate the tumultuous path of first love as a teenager.
Here’s the official synopsis:
“Young Love, a brand-new animated series exclusively on Max Originals, combines humor and genuine emotion to provide an authentic portrayal of the Young family. This endearing show follows millennial parents Stephen and Angela, their daughter Zuri, and their beloved feline companion Rocky.”
