August 1

Anthropoid (2016)

Jamie Dornan and Cillian Murphy star in this true story thriller about the WWII assassination attempt on SS General Reinhard Heydrich, the third in command after Hitler and Himmler, and the main architect behind the Final Solution.

A Passage to India (1984)

David Lean’s sumptuous epic drama based on the novel by E.M. Forster is set against the backdrop of the British Raj in the 1920s and tells the story of characters in the fictional city of Chandrapore, namely Dr Aziz (Victor Banerjee), Mrs Moore (Peggy Ashcroft), Adela Quested (Judy Davis), and Richard Fielding (Jame Fox).

Alec Guinness and Art Malik are also among the cast of Lean’s final movie which explores themes of racism, imperialism, and religion.

Blowback (2022)

After a man’s crew betrays him and leaves him for dead after a heist goes wrong, he seeks his revenge, one target at a time! Randy Couture, Cam Gigandet, and Louis Mandylor star in this underwhelming crime thriller.

Gunda (2021)

This small but beautiful documentary focuses on the daily life of a pig and his farmyard companions: two cows and a one-legged chicken. Prepare to go vegetarian after seeing this profoundly moving gem.

Poltergeist II: The Other Side (1986)

They’re here…again! In this sequel to Tobe Hooper’s Poltergeist, the Freeling family have moved to a new house but their battles with the supernatural are far from over as the first movie’s Beast, in the guise of Reverend Kane, has a vested interest in young Carol Anne. It’s up to psychic Tangina and an elderly Native American to fight for her life.

This isn’t quite as good as the 1982 movie but it’s far scarier than Poltergeist III which also lies behind the static on your TV screen on this date.

Run Hide Fight (2021)

A 17-year-old must use her wits and survival skills when her school is beset by live-streaming shooters. This ‘Die Hard in a high school’ isn’t as insensitive as it might have been, considering the rash of school shootings that have happened in recent years, but it may prove troubling for some.

Stargate (1994)

Roland Emmerich hit the Hollywood big time when he directed this sci-fi epic that follows the adventures of a linguist (Jame Spader) and a military team who travel through the titular portal and end up on another planet that looks suspiciously like Egypt. The movie spawned a long-running TV series as well as two spin-offs that expanded on the premise created by Emmerich and co-writer Dean Devlin.

The Amityville Horror (1979)

When a newlywed couple and their three children move into a large house on New Island, their dream home becomes the place of their nightmares when they are set upon by satanic forces. James Brolin, Margot Kidder, and Rod Steiger star in this classic chiller that is supposedly based on true events.

The Aviary (2022)

Creepy psychological thriller about two women who flee into the Mexican desert to escape the clutches of an insidious cult. Malin Akerman, Sandrine Holt, and Chris Messina star in this talky but unsettling tale.

The Girl On The Mountain (2022)

When a reclusive backwoodsman finds a mute girl wandering alone in the forest, he becomes determined to protect her from her vengeful father and his sadistic posse.

The Grand Seduction (2014)

Taylor Kitsch and Brendan Gleeson star in this quietly funny tale about the residents of Tickle Cove and their attempts to attract a young doctor to their town to secure a contract that will save their town from financial ruin.

The Town That Dreaded Sundown (2014)

65 years after a masked killer terrorized the small town of Texarkana, a series of ‘moonlight murders’ begin again. Could it be a copycat? Or is there something more sinister behind the deaths of local townsfolk? This remake of a 1976 movie is based on the real-life story of the Phantom Killer who caused havoc in a town that really did dread sundown!

Wildcat (2021)

When an ambitious reporter stationed in the Middle East is taken captive after her convoy is ambushed, she must find a way to bring down the militants who have taken her.

Willy’s Wonderland (2021)

It’s Nicolas Cage vs wave after wave of possessed animatronics in this comedy action flick that isn’t as much fun as it sounds.
