Episode 4
Episode 4 of Namib begins with Yoo Jin-woo contacting his friend Chris about the accident. Chris takes responsibility for the mishap, sparing Jin-woo from any legal or social fallout. Jin-woo rushes home, struggling to suppress his self-destructive tendencies, and we catch a glimpse of the scars that litter his wrist and arm—a stark reminder of his troubled past.
The following day, Soo-hyun visits her psychiatrist to renew her sleeping medication prescription. A flashback reveals how she had once taken a break from work to travel to the U.S. for Shim Jin-woo’s treatment, only to return without any breakthroughs.
Meanwhile, Soo-hyun and her team begin strategizing on how to propel Yoo Jin-woo toward success. Jin-woo later confides in Shim Jin-woo and Ji-yeong about his debt and the accident but remembers that Soo-hyun’s business card was accidentally left at the scene, sparking his concern.
That night, Soo-hyun, plagued by insomnia, catches Jin-woo sneaking out of the house. Along with Jun-seok, she follows him to the club. Jin-woo discusses the business card with Chris, but Chris dismisses the matter. Upon returning home, Jin-woo is caught stress-eating by Soo-hyun and Jun-seok, who silently take note of his distress.
The next day, Jin-woo hides his club escapades while Jun-seok invites Ji-yeong to practice for the Star Rise contest with them. Ji-yeong, disillusioned by her company’s lack of interest in long-term trainees, eagerly joins in. The two practice performing in front of Jeong-hwa’s café customers, delivering a performance that impresses everyone present.
Elsewhere, Pandora’s new CEO, Hyun-chul, learns about Soo-hyun’s efforts to nurture a new trainee, raising questions about his intentions and potential interference.
At the Star Rise registration, producers provoke Jin-woo about his background, causing him to flee to the restroom in a panic. Soo-hyun follows him but finds him composed when he reemerges. Meanwhile, the episode reveals that Ha-na, a nepotism-fueled contestant, shares a history with Chris from their trainee days. Both also seem connected to a former trainee who was close to Hyun-chul and tragically died in an accident—a detail that hints at deeper conflicts and unresolved issues within Pandora Entertainment.
Back at home, Soo-hyun and Jun-seok tweak their strategy for Jin-woo’s first-round performance. The next day, Soo-hyun drives Jin-woo and Ji-yeong to the contest, reassuring Jin-woo to trust her judgment.
Jin-woo delivers an outstanding performance, singing a song that poignantly reflects his life struggles. The episode concludes with Soo-hyun standing in the audience, creating a powerful moment of connection that the reality show producers will undoubtedly exploit for dramatic effect.
The Episode Review
Episode 4 of Namib offers a thought-provoking dive into the world of reality TV contests, where trauma and personal struggles often become sensationalized content. The show highlights the challenges faced by trainees like Jin-woo, who lack the privileges of connections. This also explains Chris’s transition from a trainee to a manager and his deep mistrust of company officials, as well as Ha-na’s reliance on her ties to Hyun-chul for an opportunity to compete.
The episode draws another parallel between Soo-hyun and Jin-woo, both grappling with mental health struggles in their own ways. Soo-hyun’s determination to guide Jin-woo’s career seems like an effort to mend not only his life but also her own fractured psych.
Her efforts to buy her son a company to secure his future reflect both her guilt and her deep desire to make amends for her negligence that led to the loss of his hearing. We are excited to see how both Soo-hyun and Jin-woo’s stories evolve in the next episode!
